"No, no way!" One of my best friends, Kasey, squealed during our lunch period.
I poked the schools mystery meat with my plastic fork, and groaned as I leaned my head onto my fist. My eyes were swollen, and my head was beating from all the crying I went through yesterday. I didn't talk to my mom this morning, or even take a single glance at her. I wanted her to know that as-of-know I hated her.
"That's not right- she should have at least given you a little heads-up, don't you think?" My other best friend, Emma, who was definitely more bearable than Kasey, reasoned.
I groaned once again, as I poked a row of tiny holes through my styrofoam tray with my fork. "No use now, they're already one their way." I looked up from my untouched food, and crossed my hands over my chest.
Emma had her brown hair braided messily, though it always suited her. She was beautiful- plenty of guys stood in line to wait for a chance, though Emma had her schedule filled to the brim with sports and school work. Her silver rectangular reading glasses rested on the top of her nose, making her electric green eyes stand out gorgeously. She held one of her many binders in her hands as she juggled eating and finishing up an essay.
Kasey, on the other hand, was almost the exact opposite of Emma. She had blonde hair, like I, though the dark roots gave it away that it wasn't natural. Kasey was pretty, yes, but more in a cute way. She was bubbly, funny, and athletic when it came to her JV tennis team. Unlike Emma, she had a boyfriend, and wasn't always on top of anything else, if you know what I mean.
Then there was me- the confused, natural straight blonde-haired girl who never knew what to make of her life. My eyes were too similar to my mothers, and I was blessed with dark eyelashes and the gift of managing to look bearable without any makeup. My parents divorced when I was five, and I was use to people growing quiet when they mentioned their fathers around me. I stood at a normal five feet five inches for being a freshman, and the only things that helped clear my mind were running, soccer, and the almighty music.
"Cam?" I snapped out into reality as I heard my name being called. I turned away from Kasey and Emma, to see yet my other best friend, Elaina, smiling at me. "Hey, heard about what's happening." She slid into the open seat next to Emma and I.
I slid my tray of crap to the other side of me, and turned to face Elaina. "Yeah, well, nothing I can do." I repeated again, counting down the seconds for the bell to end lunch.
"How many kids?" She asked. I could tell by the way he brown eyes glowed that she thought Scott would have an older son- wrong.
"Just one- a young boy of the age of five, I believe. His name's Ross." Elaina's face fell as I broke the news. Inside I smiled, because I knew Elaina was always boy crazy, and I rather not have her go after my step-brother- though outside, I pretended I was upset too.
"I know, such a drag, right? I rather not have a monkey going through my stuff and reading my diaries." I groaned, actually realizing that that may just happen.
The bell rang, ending lunch, and as I made my way out of the cafeteria away from the girls, I realized maybe Scott and his family couldn't be that bad.

Once I got home, the first thing I did was head to the kitchen to feed my growling stomach. It growled all throughout eighth and ninth period, and I couldn't help but blush profusely as people stared at me.
I threw two slices of toast into our toaster oven, and grabbed a jar of nutella from our kitchen cabinets. Setting the toaster to "toast" (it was really a challenge), I grabbed my cell phone to text Emma.
Me: theyre not here yet.
Only a few seconds later, my phone rang back with Emma's text.
Em: they r coming all the way from nj. thats a 4 hr plane trip
My toaster popped with my toast a few seconds after I finished reading her text. I grabbed the toast quickly, slightly burning my hands as I threw it onto my plate. I slipped my phone into the back pocket of my jeans, making a mental note to reply to Emma's text once I was finished eating.
I turned about to grab the jar of nutella I left on the counter, when someone's chest met with my face. I stumbled backwards as I grabbed my head. I don't remember my mother being that tall...
I looked up, completely mortified when I saw a boy starring down at me with the same expression. He looked to be two years older than me, and had long dark brown hair with big blue eyes similar to my own.
I stood still in my kitchen as my heart raced. Who is he?! What is he doing in my house?! I grabbed the butter knife I was using to spread on my nutella, and balled my hands into fists around it.
"Who the hell are you?" I whispered quietly, slightly afraid.
The guy looked just as confused. "I'm Ryan.. Ryan Hunters?"
The name rang a distant bell in the back of my mind, but I was too afraid to think hard enough.
"What are you doing in my house!" I yelled, letting go of the butter knife once I realized he was just as confused as I was.
"My house? Don't you mean our house?" His smirk told it all.
