The mission was supposed to be simple. They were supposed to break in, get the hostages, and run like hell. The only problem was that they couldn't find the hostages in time and now they were surrounded. There were too many of them. Right now it was only Steve, Bucky, Tony, and Nat. The others were outside the base and couldn't get in because they had put it on lockdown. Steve and Bucky worked together. Steve swung his shield at them and Bucky covered him with his rifle. They were making good progress. The waves of armed men started to thin.

Once it was clear, Bucky pulled Steve into a kiss. He was exhausted, but Steve was okay and that was all that mattered. He let out a choked gasp, the kiss breaking as he felt a sharp pain in his back. Steve's eyes studied him for a moment before he saw the cause. One of them hadn't been dead.

Steve tossed his shield at the man's head, knocking him down. Bucky swayed and looked like he was about to pass out, but Steve caught him, "Bucky!"

Tony and Natasha were further into the base. He had lost his comm and couldn't call for help. Bucky had forgotten his entirely.

"S-steve..." he stuttered.

"Buck... Shh... relax..." he gently lowered him to the ground. He kept a hand on his back to keep pressure over the stab wound.

Bucky's breaths were uneven and panicked, "Steve... I'm scared..." he cried.

Steve felt his heart snap in half, "shhh... don't be scared... you're alright..." he tried to fight his own tears. He wanted to stay strong for Bucky. He knew he wasn't going to make it.

"Steve..." he gasped,  "please don't leave me..." he sobbed. There was a small trail of blood streaming from the side of his mouth.

Steve placed his free hand on his cheek gently. He needed to keep Bucky calm, "remember our first kiss?"

"Y-yeah... we were dancing..."

"Do you remember the song?"

"Steve..."

"The song. Do you remember it?"

"Y-yes. Yes I do..."

"Would you like me to sing it for you?"

He nodded weakly. He knew what Steve was doing and he was so thankful for it. He comforted him. Even in death.

Steve kept his hand on his cheek, rubbing it gently with his thumb as he started to sing shakily,

"Wise men say only fools rush in
But I can't help falling in love with you"

Bucky could feel himself fading. He felt numb. It didn't hurt anymore. He tried to focus on Steve's voice as his vision swam and his eyes threatened to close.

"Shall I stay?
Would it be a sin" Tears fell from Steve's eyes and onto his cheeks. He was going to lose him again. And this time it was for good.

"Steve..." his voice was barely even a whisper.

" If I can't help falling in love with you...?" his voice broke and he couldn't sing anymore through the lump in his throat.

Bucky's eyes slipped closed, but he wasn't afraid anymore. He felt safe. His breathing was hardly even there.

Steve placed a kiss on his lips, trembling as he cried. He felt Bucky's breathing stop, "Bucky, please... no... you can't leave me. You can't. Buck, you can't." he clutched onto him tightly and cried into his chest. He remembered all the nights when he would lay his head on his chest and find comfort in his steady heartbeat. The heartbeat that was no longer there. His Bucky was gone, and he wasn't coming back this time.
