Blessed and Grace squealed and leapt into our arms. They buried their heads into our chests as they let out their fear, shock and feelings of apprehension. Tears came unbidden to my eyes as I reveled in the smell of their relief and health.
Eventually we disengaged and carried them outside. From the distance we could hear the police and ambulance sirens approaching us. Portia left me and went to where Inspector Tsono lay.
The tough-as-nuts inspector had somehow managed to roll out of the road and now lay with her blouse bunched up and pressed over her wound.
Three black SUV came screeching into view, lights flashing and alarms wailing. Before the led truck skidded to a stop, the door had opened and the suave Mr Cat ran to where my wife knelt over the still form of Inspector Tsono. The rest of his team rushed into the house.
On reaching her Mr Cat gestured for the ambulance crew to hurry. Only when she had been wheeled away did Mr Cat stood up and started talking to Portia. I couldn't hear them but from what I could see, he was yelling in anger at her. Portia remained calm until he shut up, then she came to where we were.
"We're going home. Mr Cat here says it never happened." Portia said as she hugged the twins.
"What never happened?" I enquired.
"All of it never happened, Mr Saka." Mr Cat said as he approached us. "This is a classified matter so you can't discuss it with your family, friends or workmates. I'm sorry for what you all have been put through. It's over now."
I couldn't help but notice how tired and worried he seemed. Even his make-up could not hide it.
I whispered a prayer of gratitude for my safety and my wife, and another for Inspector Tsono who was battling for her life.
