She ran, her breath heavy, and her feet sore, but she kept going. She ran because she could, because she was finally free. Free, from the evil clutches of the orphanage. The sky above her lit with billions of diamonds, the grass was soft beneath her bare feet. This was the first time she had felt grass in between her toes. She longed for this feeling for years and it was finally time. Time to go out into the other world and discover what she had been missing out on all her life.
Her black leather backpack swung behind her vigorously, as she leaped through the large field. She could see the twinkling lights of the city in front of her. She reached her hand out as if it was right in front of her and she could touch it. She knew everything about the real world.
Of course, she spent her time at the orphanage reading book after book about what the real world was like. She knew everything about it, but she longed for the feeling of being in the city. The smell, the sound and the lights. She especially longed to see those lights up close, when the time came, because all she saw of the city was through her bedroom window and no further.
She stopped at the long road in front of her. This was the black line that separated the outside world from the extraordinary, her kind of people. She looked both ways, although she knew there would be no vehicles travelling along this line, she looked anyway. Then, gazing straight ahead at the beautiful city that lay before her, she took one step, and then another, and another until she was on the other side.
She was finally free.
