I was aware I was zoning out.

I don't know what about the a figure on the deck of the tower, caught my eye. There must be something, because the silent conversation I was having with the person seated next to me , not one you could get easily distracted from by a random bird flying by.

But the boy on the deck wasn't a random bird. Or maybe he was, who knows?

Judging from the shape of his silhouette, he was contemplating jumping off the tower. Into the sea, of course.

It still isn't the most normal thing to do on a freezing winter morning. However, a placid smile formed on my face when I decided, maybe he was one of the reckless ones.

I suddenly realized that he had fallen silent once again- the one beside me, unaware of my gaze. He was staring out into the open, deep in thought. So I darted my eyes back up to the interesting figure.

Strangely, I saw two, overlapping.

At that point, I doubted that they were just young kids, playing around, probably challenging each other to dive into the bitter cold water. It looked different, they seemed extra-ordinarily calm for two people in preparation of a reckless act.

I felt panic rising in me. And before I could have contemplated the source of such unrest, they started running. Almost like their life depended on it. Or maybe, the opposite of that. My heart jumped at the soft splashing sound of water, though most of it was absorbed by the distance between them and us.

It was over within a second, after which I felt my calm return.

"Eventually..."

I would've searched for heads emerging out of the surface of the water, but I decided not to, because I heard him speak again. I was back to being all ears.

"...we have to learn to breathe underwater."

I only heard a part of what he said, but I already knew.

"Are we ever gonna learn?" I asked, doubting if he even heard me.

"Never."

He smiled, for the first time since the first day I saw him.
