13.
Nicky was taken aback.
"Excuse me? Is it really hard to assume that a man could care for Carter?"
"No, it isn't," Calvin said insulted, "that's my daughter we're talking about, of course any man would be lucky. But you're not just any man."
"So you know of me,"
"Of course I do, you're Nicholas Chandler. I know how rich you are and I know how you get it—"
"Then you should also know that I'm never ever letting Carter go. You'd have to pry her off my corpse."
"Why is that huh? Is this some threat?"
"Quiet the opposite, Carter is the love of my life. I love the way she smells, the way she talks, the way she looks when she's tried, I love how smart she is, I love her russet skin, and I will not have you send her off to some man like a business transaction."
Calvin shifted nervously in his seat, "she told you?"
"Yes, so don't look at me like I have bad intentions when you'd gladly send your beautiful daughter off to some man to keep your company afloat."
Calvin slammed the table, "for two hundred years my family fought to get this rich, you know how hard it was to be a man of my stature in the 40s? I got a death threat almost everyday, I had to homeschool Carter so that she wouldn't get attacked. And then I get a threat from a rival company telling me that if we don't combine our companies that he'll have Carter killed, and sure I could have a detail on her but I don't know who to really trust. She has a job, a house, she'd never forgive me if I just ripped her from all of it."
"So you're telling me this is all for the safety of Carter? Nothing about the millions of dollars you'd probably get if you'd merged with the company?"
"Carter is priceless! She is my heart, my soul, now I'm not a good man, I've done terrible terrible things in life but Carter is the one good thing that's come from me. She is my pride and joy, she's the reason I wake up in the morning. I'd do anything for her."
Nicky nodded, "then that's something we can agree on. But I will not have you give her off—"
"They'll kill her, you don't know what they're capable of—"
Nicholas jerked forward making Calvin flinch, "and they don't know what I'm capable of, my set up here is nothing compared to my assets, I have so much power it'd make your head spin. And I promise you that under me, Carter will never be killed. You had no right to try force Carter off like some sex slave," Nicholas fumed at the thought of his Carter being forced into submission.
"How do I trust you?"
"You don't get to ask me that," Nicky scoffed leaning back again.
Calvin nodded feeling guilty.
"I will have two members of my team watching out for you, just to keep you safe,"
"Oh really?" Calvin asked not believing Nicky.
"And to make sure you don't do anything stupid."
Calvin cleared his throat seeing Carter walk out the bathroom.
"Now when she comes back you'll tell her you approve and that you're sorry for ever trying to make her marry that man, do you understand?" Nicky demanded smiling so that Carter wouldn't see his anger.
Calvin nodded.
"Great," Nicky smiled brightly seeing Carter rush over delighted to see Nicky and her father getting along so great.
