chanmi stared at the boy as he took a long drag from the cigarette in between his lips, "that's disgusting."

"then how about you leave if you're so bothered by it?" the boy spat which only made the girl frown.

chanmi took a seat on the ground and sighed, looking out at the busy night life of seoul. she had gone up to the rooftop of her apartment building with her neighbor to release stress from school projects.

"how can you smoke?" chanmi asks, wanting to know if the boy was trying to slowly kill himself. she thought more along the lines of if i want it done, get over with in an instant.

"it's addictive, what am I suppose to do about it?" a cloud of smoke slowly left his lips and chanmi watched as the cloud disappeared into the sky.

chanmi stood up and walked towards the edge of the building's rooftop, "you'll die sooner." and slower.

"then let me," she could hear his footsteps heading towards the door to go back downstairs, "it's not like I have family to care for me or friends that like me."

the girl gave up on trying to talk to the boy, so she stared at the moon. she thought about what the boy said and his words replayed in her mind. at that moment she realized she was like him, but she found comfort in nothing, at least he had his cigarettes.

chanmi turns her head at the sound of a door closing and when she looks, she is left alone. she lets out a sigh and turns back around, kicking one foot out, trying to balance herself. the girl was use to it.

being alone to be exact.

she would always try to surround herself with people; however, she would inevitably be left alone and her thoughts would consume her. she would make herself believe the most irrational and depressing thoughts about herself. but she couldn't change it. how could she? her neighbor couldn't stop smoking and chanmi couldn't stop being dismal.

life was a drag. an unnecessary ordeal which only left her miserable.

"no one would notice," she muttered, "i have no one either."

she looked behind her, and noticed the butt of a cigarette crushed on the ground. next to it was a box of cigarettes, the cigarettes sprawled out in different directions. she sighed at the thought of the boy leaving without saying goodbye to her.

"am I that annoying that he didn't even say a simple 'goodbye' to me?" she looked over the edge and pulled out her headphones and phone from her pocket.

chanmi took a deep breath in and plugged her earbuds in, blasting the music as loud as she could get it to. she hummed along to the tune, closing her eyes as she enjoyed her favorite song. she kicked her foot out again as the song was nearing it's end. she sang the last lyrics as they came, and with that, she kicked her other foot out too.

"what do you think you're doing? are you an idiot?" chanmi looked down as she watched her phone and headphones fall, there was a loud noise of the screen cracking when it reached the ground.

she looks up to see an angry neighbor, "what?"

he roughly pulls her up and she stumbles onto the ground, "this is going to make my stress worse, making me smoke more, which will make me die earlier than I'm suppose to."

"why?"

chanmi's neighbor looked like the most frustrated person on earth, "why what?"

"why did you save me?"

he rolls his eyes as he walked up to her, "because you're the only one helping me through this hell we call a fucking life and i'd appreciate it if you didn't flake out on me."

"what?"

"god are you that dense?" he questions, sounding very irritated, "we are in this together, dumbass, so you aren't leaving without me."

she stands up and stands next to him, trying to be as intimidating as she could, "no! you can't do that!"

he ruffles her hair, "so neither can you."

the boy laughed at her attempt to be scary, she was a whole head shorter than him. he throws his arm around the girl and walks towards the door that would lead them back to their respected dorms, but that night chanmi would stay with her neighbor because the boy didn't want her trying anything while alone.

"by the way," the boy started and chanmi immediately looked at him, "i'll try to stop smoking if you don't try to do something like that again."

"okay." chanmi was quick to agree to the deal.

"promise?"

"promise."

and that was the beginning of a promise. a promise that kept the two alive.
