When the group goes out looking, we never come across another group. It seems like we are the only people left here on Earth. We struggle sometimes to keep sane, Aidan thinks we could be the lucky ones, the ones left to fight. I can only think that maybe we aren't, maybe we aren't as lucky as he hopes.
"Andy! Aidan!" Aidan gives me an exasperated look, "what do you want?" I shake my head at him, "why are you being a brat?" "just because I'm not giving you attention, doesn't mean I'm being a brat you brat." Sam and Dan were writing a new song while Aidan and I were trying to set up a tent. I had been trying to get his attention for about five minutes now. I was immensely bored and Aidan had begun thinking out loud about how maybe the world can be saved if we find a way to do this and that, I stopped listening when I realized that he basically meant that we hide forever. I began trying to build the tent while Aidan debated with a can of corn, it took me about ten minutes for me to get frustrated and give up, hence why I am now annoying him. I could hear Sam and Danny behind us singing softly, trying to save the song for a surprise, They were going to finish it and play it for us tonight.
Aidan eventually stopped talking aloud and helped me set up the tents. It was sundown when Sam and Dan finished the song, they were so excited to show us that Sam had jumped and her long braid smacked Dan and Aidan in the face. We all sat down after I had calmed myself from laughing and listened close as the song began.
"People say we've got it made don't they know we're so afraid isolation we're afraid to be alone everybody got to have a home isolation"
Aidan and I looked at each other knowing the inspiration for the song.
"Just a boy and a little girl trying to change the whole wide world isolation the world is just a little town everybody trying to put us down isolation"
Aidan, still keeping his attention on the song grabs my hand and squeezes it gently.
"I don't expect you, to understand after you caused so much pain but then again, you're not to blame you're just a human, a victim of the insane we're afraid of everyone afraid of the sun isolation the sun will never disappear but the world may not have many years isolation"
Aidan and I looked at the two younger kids, hugging them close because we know they are afraid, we know every time we make a move, the machines have made two. Maybe Aidan was right, we are lucky to be here, lucky to be alive. Or maybe, just maybe, we're the unlucky ones.
