"I'm Friends With The Monster.."

I chewed my bottom lip as I peered at the extra zeros in my bank account

I chewed my bottom lip as I peered at the extra zeros in my bank account. Two more than I'd ever seen in my life. I had more deposits than activity. Specifically four large ones.

There was the advance I had from Keith which was sitting pretty in my savings. I hadn't spent a penny of that blood money just in case I was ever propositioned with a reset button. It was a fantasy of mine actually. In a perfect world Keith would shred the contracts and all I would have to do was give the money back. It was a deep stretch but it was something to hold on to.

Then my dad, who was still regularly depositing half my rent into my account—despite me not having a place anymore. I didn't bother telling my parents about what happened. They didn't worry about me any other time. I just put the extra money in my savings to deal with at a later time.

Suzanne, who thought it better to put me on pay roll than to cut a severance check. She claimed to be worried about me having steady income until I found something that stuck, but I knew it was so she could claim more in taxes.

And finally my insurance check that I'd been waiting to post for the damages in my apartment. It was a little more than 3 grand which was generous but not nearly enough to start over in New York. I'd have to sit down and do a full review of my finances and budget out my expenses until I was back on my feet. Without any outside influence.

Ironically, Republic had hired someone for a similar job but I fired him the same day. I still knew how online banking worked and I figured I wasn't that rich yet anyway.

I took a sip of the Bai tea I had ordered from the kitchen. A drink I had once criticized Nicki for consuming was too, apart of my daily routine. It was the closest thing I was gonna get to the refined sugar I so desperately craved.

I set the bottle aside and sighed. The thought of Nicki soured my stomach a little. I wasn't really sure how I felt toward her. She wasn't my favorite person at the moment but I also couldn't be openly upset with her without coming off like a complete nutcase.

For one of the first times in my life I was thankful for her crazy schedule and the distance it kept between us. I intended to use the time to gather myself but almost two weeks had passed and I was still avoiding it like the plague. Every time Nicki would touch on the subject I'd dismiss it in the most intricate way, finding every loophole possible so I wouldn't technically be lying. What would I say anyway? You cheated on me with me? I'd lock me up and throw away the key too. The whole ordeal made my blood boil.
