Chapter 1

Getting straight into position for the climax of my dance, I prepare myself for the grand jeté when my music gets cut off. I whirl around, eyes scanning the vicinity for the one who dared to interrupt my practice session and end up finding a grinning Daniel carelessly leaning against the doorframe of the dance studio I am in.

"What was that for?" I whine, immediately relaxing when I realize it is just Daniel. He knows very well that I hate to be interrupted in the middle of practice but yet he does it every time, and somehow even manages to get Kaden to join him in teasing me and I can't find it in my heart to throw a tantrum at the boys who have taken care of me for the past few years.

"Jenny said to call you down for dinner," he said, coming over to playfully yank my bun apart, causing my light brown locks to swoosh down in front of my face. I tilt my head up to glare at him but stop short when a grin makes way onto his face. Does he even know what that gorgeous smile does to females? Of course he does. The mischievous glint in his hazel brown eyes tells me he knows exactly what he's doing.

I disconnect my phone from the speakers and walk towards the door, Daniel's left arm looping over my shoulders as we make our way downstairs to the dining room. Even from upstairs we could hear Kaden and Lila squabbling over a grilled chicken drumstick that they had both set their eyes on.

Entering the room, Daniel and I take our respective seats at the rectangle marble table holding a large plateful of grilled meat, me and Daniel on one end, Kaden and Lila on the other, and Jenny sitting at the head of the table.

"What took you two so long?" Jenny asks, munching on a piece of grilled chicken and looking up to glare at us two playfully.

"Well a certain someone didn't want to be interrupted in the middle of dance practice," Daniel turns his head to smirk at me.

"I lost track of ti-"

The sound of a gunshot echoes through the room and we all snap our heads up to look at the door. I slip my hands under the table to pull out a pistol, flicking the barrel open to check for bullets and I see out of the corner of my eye the others doing the same.

Silently standing up from my seat, I aim the pistol right at the middle of the door and glance up at the television mounted on the wall showing footage from CCTV cameras set up all around the house. Nothing suspicious catches my eyes.

The sound of the doorknob slowly rattling makes me snap my eyes back to my target on the door and my fingers automatically click the pistol, ready to fire.

What comes through the door next, or rather, who walks in next is unexpected, because the sight of a tiny blonde baby boy being held at gunpoint in front of a whole gang breaks my heart.
