We didn't have any time to waste in the morning- we were all groggy teenagers, but managed to get up early and set off. The beautiful early mist freshened up our mood, and soon enough we were passing around the AUX cord again and having a blast. I decided to give the trip a song that matched our situation. I was thinking Hometown, but I wanted something more light for the atmosphere. I chose Paradise. As soon as I put it on, the laughter reduced, and everyone started to pay deep attention to the lyrics. Abria even started to tear up- me holding back tears, trying to be strong for everyone as they seemed to be barely pulling themselves together. We all knew how hard this was on us. A sudden change on all of us.
I had decided to sit next to Lester this time, so he was gripping my hand tight throughout the whole song. Josh and Kathy couldn't stop making accidental eye contact, which made me had to hold in giggles. The song ended, and we all sighed heavily.
"Damn, Casper." Lacara sighed, and I chuckled.
I found myself wondering who her soulmate would end up to be, and Abria's. Would we meet them on the way? Months later? The possibilities were endless. Hours and hours of endless driving went on, until we stopped in a small town near the border of Oregon. We all got out to stretch our legs, and Josh took us to a small cafe for lunch. Well, lunch-dinner. Linner.
We were all starving even though we practically I snacked the whole way, and with all my friends next to me and a whole life of possibilities ahead of me, I actually wanted to eat this time.
I had ordered the same as Lacara and Lester; tuna casserole. Josh and Kathy shared a heart covered sprinkle sundae, and Abria got a cheesecake with a small cup of tea.
"So, I thought I'd tell you guys this now..." Josh started. We were all confused.
"Tell us what?" Lester asked.
"Okay, it's more of a small surprise." Josh grinned.
Everyone's eyes gleamed as they're always in for surprises.
"So, I actually have a very close friend that lives in Medford. His name is Leon. He agreed to help us out. He's actually on his way to this highway now. We should meet up in a few hours or so." Josh explained, pursing his lips, waiting for our reaction. We all nodded happily, pleased with the idea, and Josh slumped his shoulders in relief like he was worried we hated the idea.
"So, what's Leon like?" Abria asked, sipping her honey-green tea.
"Well, he's tall. 15, too. Brown hair, Latino, y'know. He's a great guy." Josh said simply. Lacara flinched and I raised an eyebrow. Then out of nowhere I started to laugh so hard and everyone stared at me like I had grown a third arm. I regained my breath and waved it off.
"What was all of that about?" Kathy laughed, everyone nodding in agreement.
"Sorry, just an inside joke." I giggled, staring at Lacara as she blushed, trying to contain a smile. She had a thing for Latinos.
We ate our Linner then hopped back into the trunk. Sure enough, after hours of more fun, we stopped in a small rest-stop town. I always felt nervous meeting new people, but Lacara was a different story. Her hands were shaking, so I held them tightly, giving her a warm smile.
"It's okay, I got your back. We're just meeting a new friend." I said assuringly, and she brushed her long beautiful brown hair behind her ears. Her soft hazel eyes met mine, as if to say 'Okay, I trust you.'
Josh led us to a bench under a tree near a tiny cafe, and there he was. Leon was leaning against the tree, his brown hair glistening in the sunlight. His caramel brown eyes scanned us over, and he gave us a wide grin. He wore a grey flannel and tattered jeans, and looked super-friendly just at sight. He and Josh tackled each other in a hug, laughing.
"Josh! Haven't seen you in forever!" Leon exclaimed, hugging him tighter in a bear-squeeze. Josh laughed, "Missed you, man." He looked over at me and Lacara. "You know how you two grew up together? Same as me and Leon." He smiled. I grinned, and Leon came over to us. He hugged Lester first, since they obviously knew each other too. My heart melted. He gave us all a quick hug, but when he reached Lacara, they both hesitated a bit- as if there was some gut reaction between the two of them. My heart skipped a beat when I saw the tips of his fingers were black.
He held out a high-five to Lacara, and she slowly high-fived back. The black tips of their hands glowed red-orange-yellow-green- it went on! It was beautiful. Me and everyone else cheered happily, and Leon and Lacara just kept gazing into each other's eyes, blushing furiously. They really didn't know what to do, which just made us laugh even more.
"M-My name's Lacara." She blurted.
"So nice to meet you." He grinned at her, and I squealed a little. I was such a fangirl- even when it came to my own friends. Later on, Leon had taken on driving, so Josh finally got to rest. He sat in the front next to him, laughing their butts off at inside jokes. Lacara had her head against my shoulder the whole time, and never said a word. I knew she was dying on the inside. When Leon would make really cheesy puns, she was always the one that laughed a bit louder. My heart squeezed. They were so perfect for each other.
I did feel a little bad, though. Abria was the only one left without a soulmate. I prayed to god that she'd find her's soon.
The whole 'soulmate' atmosphere was getting to Lester. When we had gotten out to stretch after a while, getting back into the trunk, he had sat down right next to me before Lacara could even climb the truck.
"My turn." He laughed, and me and her burst out into laughter. I hoped my face wasn't as red as it felt. Lacara sat next to Abria this time, and Abria tried to show her memes, but all she did was absent-mindedly nod at her as she listened to Leon's stories. Lester had held my hand the whole time- which was enough to send my adrenaline through the roof.
The sunset rolled by, making my eyelids droop. I felt myself slump against Lester's shoulder, my brain shutting off.
