Burn in Hell

Cold darkness. The only thing that lit up the deserted, eerie street was the dim glow from the asylum. Also the fact that it was pouring outside. I thanked the thickness of my garments for some protection against the rain and cold.

Jacob and I trudged over to a struggling Charles Darwin and his misbehaving umbrella. Once he saw us, he threw his umbrella off to the side in such excitement.

"Mr. Frye! And your lady friend! I trust you both had a productive meeting with Mr. Owen?" he asked.

"Oh yes," I said sarcastically. "We had quite the pleasant chat." Jacob elbowed my side gently but he smiled at my humor.

"Yes. Aus was able to find out the man behind Starrick's Soothing Syrup. It's John Elliotson."

"John Elliotson? That's not a name I have heard in years. He was a brilliant heart specialist until he became obsessed with phrenology and mesmerism. It ruined his career." Jacob and I both made a worried face. "Well, how shall we proceed?" Darwin asked as if his ominous moment a minute ago was nothing.

"Well, Mr. Darwin. With all due respect, I think Aus and I should proceed in there alone. After all, we wouldn't want to attract any...'unwanted attention.'"

"Sounds very wise," Mr. Darwin said after a brief moment of silence as if debating on arguing with us. "Good luck, my boy." With that, he patted Jacob's arm and spun around quickly, heading away from the asylum. As if he forgot something, he spun back around and added, "Oh, and Mr. Frye, uhh...Aus...should you both find yourself with any free time, please do call on me."

With that, he turned around and went about his merry way with a lilt in his step and a whistle on his tongue.

I watched him depart with the utmost curiosity. "What a strange man!" I exclaimed.

"Pfft, you're telling me," Jacob said.

"How did you even come by this man?" I asked as we headed towards the looming asylum.

"Ehh...long story," Jacob replied, waving aside my question.

Even before we entered the asylum, I could smell the terrors within.

"I have a bad feeling about this," I said.

"London is feeding into this man's cruel behaviors. We can't stop now; Elliotson must be put to an end."

As we neared the asylum, I noticed Jacob heading towards the front door. I stopped in my tracks. "That's a terrible idea. You'll attract attention. There's sure to be guards behind those doors."

"Aus, now isn't the time for this. Just do as I say and we'll get this over with fast and easy."

"Nothing is ever easy with you, Jacob. I refuse to enter through that door. I'm taking that open window." I pointed a few stories up to the open window.

Jacob instead grabbed my arm and tried dragging me to the door. I pulled myself free. "Aus--"

"I said no, Jacob. Leave me be and go your way! We'll finish the job and meet back here." I left Jacob and towards the side of the asylum and hit the wall, making my way up the wall. I climbed around locked windows and balconies until I reached my open window and swung myself in. I didn't like Jacob's protection over me. I knew what I was doing. Why did he care?

I evaded guards easily. I hid in the shadows and worked my way around danger. Ducking under unwanted eyes was no problem, however, the smells were absolutely horrifying. Medicine and human flesh combined was a pungent, nauseating odor.
