Chapter 5: I successfully performed a séance and I get a riddle? Just great.

“So it wasn’t meant to actually work huh?” I asked. Jo seemed to shrink before my eyes.

“Yeah just thought you two were crazy,” He muttered quietly, “Thought if it didn’t work you two would go back to as normal as you could be.”

He looked up at us. Lucca and I exchanged glances. Jo coughed and then took out a notebook. From his pocket.

“Well if I’m going to have to believe you then let’s get started with figuring out what’s happening,” He started writing out the number six before underlining it twice.

“So what do we start with?” I asked.

“What did the presence write? The number six. So we should start with that. What makes the number six special?” Jo explained.

“Makes sense. So what part of six do we start with?” Lucca sat in a chair and leaned forwards.

“Well let’s start with what objects are related to the number six. Clocks have the number six written on them at the bottom,” Jo wrote that down then turned to Lucca.

“Right so six. Hexagons. A cube has six faces. A guitar has six strings,” Lucca listed.

“Yeah the presence thing is definitely looking for a guitar,” I rolled my eyes, “Oh and cubes with drawings of hexagonal clocks on them.”

“Jesse we’re trying to help here. Try and cooperate.”

“I’ll cooperate when this actually leads somewhere.” They both stared at me.

“It does lead to something! Maybe there’s something related to the number six that the presence wants. We could just leave it out or burn it so it won’t come back,” Lucca suggested.

“Do you really think that burning it will get rid of the presence?” I lifted an eyebrow.

“Maybe it will. No harm in trying,” he shrugged, “It could work. It’ll get rid of something at least.”

“But what if it doesn’t work?”

“I don’t know.”

“Exactly! It’ll have to be something else. You want to try this out? Let’s try then!” I grabbed a piece of paper and folded it into a six by six cube, drew a hexagon on it before making the hexagon look like a clock. I lit a match and held it up to the cube. It started burning away slowly and soon disappeared.

“Hey mysterious thing! Give me a sign if you’re still there!” I shouted. The lights flickered once. I smirked triumphantly at the two of them who just blinked. Outsmarted by me, they should be ashamed.

“What if that wasn’t it because you just created it?”

I groaned and face palmed, “What if we’re thinking of this in the wrong way?”

“We are?” Lucca asked.

“Don’t you see we’re thinking of material matter? What if it isn’t an object? We could burn all the guitars and cubes with hexagonal clock drawings on them and the presence could still come back! What if it’s in fact just something that used to be? Like I don’t know something that occurred six times in history?”

“You have a point,” Jo said, looking like he was thinking intensely.

“Thank you!” I cried out.

“But what if it isn’t?” Mental. Face. Palm.

“Do you really care? It isn't something material! That’s all I know!” I threw my hands up in the air, “Why do you think it is?”
