Jamal's POV:

After praying Dhuhoor in congregation at the school mosque, I headed to the parking lot and slid into my car, exiting the school premises. I drove at an average speed. Halting at the checkpoint, I switched on the aircon while connecting my phone to the Bluetooth device just then, For life by Runtown came up playing. I waited patiently as the once halted cars move forward slowly. Glancing at my wristwatch, it was quarter past two.
"Yasalam...This is why I hate Maiduguri and the idea of serving in this school!." I scoffed to myself.
The school is based near a Barack, so for that reason, checkpoints are sited at every short intervals. I don't blame them at all tbh because the security level of the state is unstable. A little crowd or gathering, and the next thing is a bomb blast. Lately there has been insurgency brought about by a terrorist group in the North East. Initially, their aim was to abolish western education which led to a war, but gradually, the whole thing has transformed into a political issue.
I passed the checkpoint and sped off taking my turn to the left ingressing the G.R.A where my home is located. As silent as the road was, lined with acacia plantations, it remained me of the lonely house waiting for my arrival for all members of the family were staying at Abuja.
I honked as soon as I reached home. The gate was opened by Jibr the house boy and also my only companion greeting me as I nodded in response. I strolled upstairs barging into my room and collapsed on my bed.
The ringing of my IPhone woke me up. As tired as I was cursing under my breath,I picked up the call without viewing the caller ID and there came her voice...
"Are you still on your way home?"she asked sarcastically. OMG! this girl is breathing fire, I mentally palmed my face in frustration.
"I'm so sorry baby...I was about..." she cuts me off midsentence.
"Hold it...who the fuck do you think you're to be playing me around like your puppet? Oh my goddddd, like seriously? Who the fuck is the new bitch? Anyways I'm not ready for any of your flimsy explanations." Shouting her reply, she hissed and cut the line off. Like seriously...she didn't even tried listening to me and then she just concluded that I'm cheating? Who does that? I wonder why I'm still in a relationship with this girl. Even though she's beautiful and so on, that doesn't give her the guards to talk to me that way.
Dumbfounded, I stayed that way still holding the phone to my ears not knowing what to do. I tried calling her back but instead she ended it as soon as her line started ringing which infuriated me the more.
Munirah was a girl I met during my first year in The Pennsylvania state university. Though I was majoring in business and she was in economics, we shared some classes where I eventually got to know her more. We started dating and things were moving smoothly between us Alhamdulillah, until after our graduation when I decided to come back to Nigeria for my youth service while she chose to stay over there for her masters program. She grew into this nagging lady, routinely accusing me of cheating on her with other girls down here. There was this time she even blames me for a dream she had of me and an anon lady having an affair, as waggish as it sounds, that led to a fight that lasted for almost a month because she wasn't ready to accept my 'apology' of cheating on her I her dream.
I glanced at the wall clock and it was already 4:30pm.
"Astagfirullah...did I just missed Asrr?" I walked into the toilet and performed ablution. After praying, I made some du'a for my problems to Allah and suddenly, the anger I once felt before subsided miraculously which I thanked Allah for that. I typed Hafiz an SMS telling him to meet me up at Lè ring for a gym session. I took a quick shower and shoved into a tank top and sweatpants. Finally tying the lace of my trainers I grabbed my backpack and car keys heading to the parking lot.
It was a fifteen minutes drive down to the gym. I pulled up at the parking space and noticed Hafiz's car wasn't there yet. Sighing, I dugout my phone from my pants pocket and adjusted my seat placing my head on the headrest. I logged into twitter and scrolled down my tweet list replying some offline DMs. Minutes passed by as I grew impatient, just then I spotted his car through the side mirror. He parked and I hopped out of my car grabbing my backpack.
"Thanks man...for keeping me waiting." I glared at him.
"My pleasure" he answered chuckling giving me an unapologetic look. Hafiz is a habitual late comer at any cost, tbh I won't be surprised if he's late at his own wedding.
We made our way into gym and begin our daily exercise. It was 6:40pm so we drove to the nearest mosque and prayed Maghrib before heading to House of prawns for dinner.
"Sup man, are you looking for a hidden treasure in there?" Hafiz asked digging into his mac and cheese. I sighed. Maybe he noticed how I'd played with the spoon and my untouched food, so warily, I replied him.
"It's Munirah again."
I was surprised to how he dropped his spoon, making a loud clattering sound.
"Grow up man...for goodness sake there are a lot of fine girls down here who're willing to love and care for you and pay you cash for that. So why do you let this not so fine, nagging and annoying girlfriend of yours bother you?" He was annoyed I can tell from the way he sound. I wasn't bewildered by his statement tho, because Hafiz never liked Munirah for once. He always insist that she's nagging and annoying and vise vasa.
"Hey fucker...she's a nice girl and she's not annoying." I chuckled.
"How can she be annoying to you? After all she has casted a spell on you..."
I was silent this time not knowing what to say.
"What is it again this time around?" He asked hesitantly.
"She called me yesterday when I left your crib. I was nearing a checkpoint so I told her I'll call her back as soon as I reached home....eventually, I was so tired when I got home so I slept off. She called me later this afternoon swearing and throwing profanities. It even got to the point where she started accusing me of cheating again. I tried explaining and she cut the line off. I called her back and she ended it. Now I'm so messed up and I don't know what to do. She's so mad at me I guess." I cued what happened to him.
"Look at the way she's emotionally blackmailing you." He rolled his eyes, "please...try and not call her. Let her know you can still live without her. And for once, don't be a dickhead. So do as I say." He concluded his sentence stressing the last part.
I just laughed and silently prayed to God for the strength to do that.
By 9:30pm, We parted and I went home, prayed my Ishaa, watched a movie and with that, I slept off.
