Afra's POV:
Laying down on the couch, I read through my old WhatsApp messages with Mahmoud to while away time. I smiled to myself when I came across a specific conversation where I inquired for a break up. His reaction was absurd. He wasn't aware that I wanted to prank him, so I waited until after three days when he was fed up of pleading with me and was about to inform our parents about my decision before I told him it was a prank. He made me promise that I wouldn't do it again. As silly as our relationship sounds, I enjoyed it so so much that the thought of how everything felt strange right now brings tears to my eyes. I still can't tell what went wrong. Maybe he's a little bit over possessive, but that was how he was since the beginning. Something must be wrong...I thought to myself. To start with, Mahmoud is my cousin, but the way he's treating me lately in the relationship is so unfair.
"Kin fasa zuwa birthdayn kawar naki neh? (Aren't you going to your friend's birthday party anymore?)"
I heard Maaaa's voice asking from the kitchen. I glanced at the wall clock and it was already quarter pass three.
"No Maaaa, I'll get ready right away" I answered.
And with that, I went up to my room to dress up for Botul's birthday party, since it was to take up by 4:00pm. I rummaged through my closet and brought out my black silky abaya which was adorned with black shiny stones and it's veil and lay it on my bed, I matched it up with my nude Dior chain bag and a pair of slippers that matched the bag. Smiling to myself for a job well done, I walked to the bathroom, took a cold shower and performed my ablution. I wore my clothes, did my hair and prayed Asrr. For the fact that I was never a heavy makeup fan, I applied slight makeup and by 3:35, I was downstairs waiting for my mom to drive me off.
"Maaaa...we are going to be late." I shouted up to her.
"Just a minute, nakusan gamawa(I'm almost done)." I sat on the single sitter waiting for her. Well a minute in her language means eternity...I've snapped pictures, viewed people's stories on Snapchat, lied severely to Botul that I'm almost there, received tons of messages from her, some cursing and some pleading with me, but still, Maaaa is still nowhere in sight.
Finally, after waiting frustratedly she came down and it was already 4:15. Without a word, we toured our way to the driveway and drove off. We checked into Rash gift store at milk shop and grabbed her her favorite chocolates and a big pink teddy bear, which I knew she'll love. The wrapping took a little bit, Maaa settled the bills and we left.
The drive to Botul's place was silent, so I slid into daydreaming. I'm so sure Botul's brother, Hafiz, will be there, I pray it won't be as awkward as the last day we met.•••••••••
It was fun fair, so Hafiz drove Botul and I to the venue. We were supposed to help Salma in selling out her cupcakes. On reaching there, he tagged along with us, and all thanks to his killer looks and flirting demeanor, he helped us vend all our cupcakes earlier than expected. Of course majority of our customers were girls. *smh*
The event was still on and we were done with our sales so Hafiz suggested we go get some ice cream to cool our temperature because the sun was scotching hot. Salma and Botul declined his offer and with that, we set off for ice cream hunt. We bought the ice creams and were making our way back just when I spotted him chatting cheerfully with a group of girls who could be few years older than me. I didn't know if I was jealous, angry or shocked, but either way I was mad as hell. It was Mahmoud.
I personally invited him to the event but he gave me tons of excuses why he can't make it. I decided not to go too but changed my mind when the girls pressed on me to go. Not thinking twice, I change my direction and walked down to him. I went and stood right behind him fuming like a dragon.
"What are you doing here, Mahmoud?"
Yeah...that was all I can ask at the moment. He jerked, twitching his forehead. From the looks on his face, he was clearly surprised but he quickly masked it up with a confident one.
"Afra...who's this?" Mahmoud retorted.
Stunned, I stared between him and the direction he was pointing, where Hafiz was standing blankly not knowing what to say. He got to be kidding me, I thought. I literally caught him with girls at the event he told me he couldn't make it and this is all he can say? I was mute on not knowing what to say again.
"Stop scrutinizing me and answer my question"
he mentioned authoritatively.
"You said you wasn't gonna make it..." now my voice was shaking. "you told me you were going to be busy Mahmoud. Is this what you now refer to as busy?" I asked, gesturing at the girls.
"So you thought since I wasn't going to be here, this can be a perfect time to bring your little boyfriend over right?"
He shot back, gesturing to Hafiz too. Not knowing what to say, I bursted into tears. The girls started giggling which riled me up more.
"Can you stop embarrassing yourself and cease crying like the spoilt brat you are?" He spoked again infuriating me the more. This guy has grown bigger balls I thought. He's so good at making me look stupid.
"Hey take it easy on her...can't you see she's battered already"
Hafiz cautioned, anger prominent in his voice.
"And the fuck do you think you're?"
Mahmoud jested. The next scene was just like a movie, Hafiz threw him a punch and it all turned into a fight. I was doing my all to stop the duo while the girls were laughing their hearts out. At long last, the securities intervened and with that, I called my mom to pick me up. That was my last encounter with Hafiz.******************
