Dear Alice,

This one is coming from your father, yesterday day you came into the world and it was the happiest day of my life. But it was also the saddest. Your mother loved you unconditionally, even before you were born.

The doctors called me into the room and asked if I would like to hold my daughter. I was overcome by joy, "of course!" I said, my voice raising with excitement. I walked into the room and tried to calm my nerves so that I would not drop my precious princess. I took a deep breath and then let it go.

"Here you are Mr. Night." A nurse with short black hair handed you to me. My heart melted when I first laid eyes on you. You looked so much like your mother; you had her bright shining blue eyes, you had her soft pink skin. You cried for a bit, just the normal cry and then you were silent. Your eyes looked up at mine and I could tell that I was the luckiest man alive. You were small and frail. I knew I was going to do all in my power to protect you.

I looked over at your mother and smiled softly. She looked so peaceful as she slept. Except her chest wasn't moving, my heart began to race. Tears swelled my eyes as I glanced to the machine she was hooked to. Straight lines and zero's filled the screen, I looked to the nurses and their faces showed sorrow, telling me enough that I could feel my heart breaking.

My love, my wife, my world, your mother, was dead. She died giving birth to you.

I stumbled back. Anger, sorrow, confusion filled my mind. I would have lashed out if I hadn't been holding you. Looking into your innocent eyes, your mother's gift to you, made me smile. You are my gift from her. I knew she would be watching over us from above.

She always loved you. Don't forget it.

Love,

Dad.
