chapter 2
I was shaking, shivering. It feels like I’m in the Arctic. I rubbed my eyes until I felt like they were on fire. I opened them to see I was in a small cramped room with wooden walls and floors, a single twin sized bed on the opposite side of the room with 3 pillows and a quilt, and a free-standing lamp with a dull bulb. Then there was me, in an old night gown in a ball formation in the corner. I let out a slight cough. My throat was burning and I felt lightheaded again.
Where am I?
I thought to myself.
Then I heard him. Him. Walking towards the room ever so gently. He walked with such gracefulness, you had to be in dead silence just to hear them coming.I held my breath and inhaled. I buried my head in my knees, not daring to take a peek.
“Natalie.”
His voice was soft and calming. It was.... beautiful.
“Natalie” He repeated. I didn’t dare move.
He started moving closer until he crouched in front of me. He let out a little cough.
“I’m not going to hurt you.”
Huh. Not going to hurt you my ass.
“You must be starving, I made some pasta, I know it’s your favorite.”
Right then and there I froze. With my head still tucked into my knees I let out a whisper.
“How do you know that.” I was about crying now.
“Come into the kitchen and I’ll tell you.” I opened my eyes to take a peek and his hand was in front of me.
“Get away from me, I can help my self up.” I snapped. He backed up with his hands up like he was just about to get arrested.
“As you wish.”
PART TWO
I tiptoed down the hall. There were 4 doors, all shut. One had to be the bathroom, who could live in a house with no bathroom?
Since I opened my eyes I haven’t seen a single window. But then I saw it, the light. As I turned the corner I saw a kitchen. A huge one, I definitely did not expect it in a house like this. He was sitting on a stool at the breakfast bar.
“I’m glad you came out.” He said with a smile and a coffee mug in hand.
He disgusts me. How can he be smiling like that?
I don’t dare look into his eyes, those big beautiful blue e yes of his.
Shut up, Natalie. What are you saying?
I look out into the window and my mouth drops. I went to the sunny setting of New York to an icy cold wonderland standing before me. I realized after a few seconds my house is wide open so I shut it. He turns around to inspect what I’m staring at, like he already doesn’t know.
“Beautiful, right?” He takes a sip of his coffee, keeping his eyes glued on mine. I can’t think of what to say. No, not in this moment.
“Pastas getting cold” He takes another sip of his coffee.
Who has coffee with pasta?
“How do you know thats my favorite thing?” I keep a straight face, still not looking into his eyes.
“Sit down and I’ll tell you.” He pulls out a chair next to him for me. I shake my head.
He lets out a heavy sigh. “As you wish.”
I grit my teeth, I can’t stand this asswhole.
“Well, I’ve known you since you were 9.” My mouth drops, again. So does my heart, my whole brain also.
Since I was 9, how? We lived in different countries. Then I realize.
He has an accent, a british one. Just like me.
I’m furious now, he has some nerve spying on a 17 year old for 8 years.
“If you sit down, I’ll tell you the whole story.” He raised his eyebrows.
I walk over to where he’s sitting and sit down on the stool next to him.
