this got real deep real quick whoops
"It's okay. Just breathe Kait." His voice repeated. I took a deep breath and was flooded with his sent and my stomach with butterflies.
"I'm sorry." I laughed, pulling out of the hug and wiping away the tears that formed in my eyes. I felt so stupid. Why am I crying?
"Don't apologize." Phil rubbed my back while Dan stood in front of me.
"I didn't think you were coming back. I thought you hated me and that we'd never talk again." I started rambling.
"Hey, but we're back now, aren't we? Look I'm sorry. What happened shouldn't have. But it's okay. We'll fix this." Dan smiled at me, and Phil hugged me.
"We aren't going anywhere again anytime soon. I promise." He mumbled. I sighed and wrapped my arms around him.
"Alright. I should probably get back to work, bye guys. Text me soon, okay?" I smiled, waving.
"Will do!" They said, turning to do their shopping.
I bought the items and went back to work, soaking my fingers in an acetone and vinegar mix and rubbing the epoxy off quickly.
"Well, that was effective." I sighed, pouring the rest down the sink in the bathroom and continuing the project. I placed the multicolored eggs into the outer ring of the vase and carefully squeezed some of the epoxy onto the eggs to help seal them in place. I set the vase aside to dry and placed the flowers in a separate vase with water to help keep them alive.
I decided to turn on my playlist on Spotify (link in bio XD) and 'Beside You' by 5 Seconds of Summer comes on. I sing quietly and start to put the materials but up. When I finish cleaning up, I go check on Damien. I peek my head out from my doorway and see him still sitting on the counter, one knee pulled to his chest and the other laying flat. I notice that he's asleep, and I smile softly to myself.
I walk to the display window and turn off the neon sign, noting that its way past closing time. It's already dark out. I almost decided to wake up Damien but decided to let him sleep a while longer. I go back into my room and finish packing up my things and sliding my arms into my hoodie, zipping it up and grabbing my earbuds, plugging them into my phone and putting one bud into my ear.
I shut and lock my door, placing my bag outside of the door. I quickly change the water for all of the live flowers so they stay fresh, and threw out all the dead ones, replacing them with some new flowers. I look over and see Damien is still asleep. I wish I cold sleep the way this kid does.
I softly shake him. "Damien, get up honey," I spoke softly so that he didn't wake up with a jump, but he still did.
"Please no!" He let out a soft scream, his voice cracking as he pushed me away.
"Hey, Dame, it's just me. Breathe." I said, noticing his breathing increase in speed. I stepped away, pulling out my earbud.
"I'm sor- I'm sorry." He tripped over his words, slowing his breathing, though his breaths are still shallow.
"It's okay," I told him, wondering why he restricted that way.
"It-It won't happens again!" He said, and I could see tears in his eyes. This kid is only 17, I can only imagine whats going on at home.
"It's okay, it really is. We didn't have any customers today." I started, but he still looked like a deer caught in the headlights. "Damien, is everything okay at home?" I knew it was none of my business, but if he isn't safe, I don't want him to be in that position anymore.
"I... I can't talk about it." He sighed, wiping his eyes.
"Alright. If you feel unsafe, just know my door is always open and my phone is always on. I know you're still new and that may seem strange but if you aren't safe at home, my door is open." I told him, words pouring out of my mouth. His breath shuttered.
"Thank you." He bit his lip before coming up to be and hugging me. I wrapped my arms around his torso.
"Always," I said, pulling out of the hug. "I'm going to give you my address and phone number okay? Use them anytime. If I'm not home, give me a call and I'll come home." I said, grabbing an old flier and a pen, writing both and handing it to him. He read both for a minute before folding it up and putting it in his pocket.
"Thank you." He repeated.
"Always. Now, go get some sleep. Call me if you need me." I said, grabbing my bag and popping my earbud back in.
"Alright." He sighed, holding the door open for me. I mumbled thanks and locked up shop.
