Stanley was one of the few boys that slept round Bill's house. Stanley stayed a while after Ritchie and Eddie left together. Bill and Stan hung out in the garden together lying in the sun. They laid in Bill's parents deck chairs most of the afternoon. In a comfortable silence until Stanley changed that.
"Hey Bill, can I tell you something??" Bill looked up at Stan in surprise from his sudden outburst.
"Of course you c-can." Stan was one of Bill's best friends and he would always listen to him. Why wouldn't he. Bill could tell Stan was nervous so he put his hand on his and gave him a reassuring look. Stan looked at him and gave him a weak smile.
"Bill, I'm gay." Bill looked at him surprised, he did not see that coming. But he's a Jew, what's her going to tell his parents? He can always stay here if they don't agree with him. Bill didn't mind that he was gay, it wouldn't change anything Stan was still one of his best friends. He looked at Stan in the eyes and smiled.
"That's c-cool. If you're g-gay you're gay I don't m-mind." Stan let out a sigh of relief. The only other person he had told was Ritchie and he also didn't mind. He was going to take his time with this. He looked at Bill and smiled. He lowered himself back into the deck chair and closed his eyes. As did Bill.Bill's mum made them both some food and Stan said goodbye. As he was walking home he was thinking about what his parents would say. Whether they wouldn't mind or they'd hate it. Probably the latter. As he got home he opened the door and no one was home so he went upstairs to his bedroom and practised his reading from the Torah. As he recited lines from the book he kept thinking about something. Something that was distracting him. It was a certain someone that he was thinking of and he couldn't help it. After a while he got bored of reading from his Torah and went to go downstairs. As he walked down the stairs holding onto the banister, he heard shouting. His mum and dad. What were they fighting about? His mum and dad often shouted at each other, mostly about money problems, but other things too. He snuck into the kitchen and opened the fridge eyeing up all the snacks.
"What do you think you're doing, young man?" His mother suddenly said. She didn't usually like him eating before dinner. He stood deadly still like a deer in the headlights of a car. He slowly looked towards her. Her face showed anger, but Stan didn't think it was because he was trying to get food.
"Me and your mother need to tell you something." His dad said in a calmer tone. Whilst his dad looked at Stan innocently his mother was shooting arrows at his father. She seemed pissed. As they all sat down at the mahogany table, Stanley was very confused. Before either one started talking they exchanged looks making gestures on who should tell him.
"Stanley, your mother and I are getting a divorce." Stanley could feel a lump forming in his throat. He did not like this at all! Who was he going to live with? Suddenly loads of questions come flooding into his head. He felt himself heating up, he couldn't handle it. He started to feel light headed. Like he had just been hit in the head by a tennis ball. His parents looked at him with a worried look. With that he started to lose consciousness. His eyes closed and he fell to the floor. His parents got up and rushed towards him. His mother holding his face crying whilst his father dialled 911.A few hours later Stanley woke up in his bed confused. His head was throbbing. He looked around to see his mum and dad sat by the side of his bed. He saw his mums face light up as she witnessed her son wake up.
"What happened?" Stanley's parents paused, they didn't know what to say, they looked at each other for a second then his mother looked away. He looked round at his room with the Star of David on his window that was letting in a ray of sunshine. He started to remember what his parents told him and frowned. He was not happy. Why was it his parents that had to split up? He didn't even know Jews could do that. He stood up and shook his head pushing his parents out the way and walking through the door. He grabbed his kippah from the dining room table and went to the mirror. He moaned to himself with hair pins in his mouth. He didn't want to be there anymore, so he left. After walking around Derry town with no money he didn't know what to do. He couldn't go back home, maybe he'd sit in the park for a bit, lean over kissing bridge and look into the water, wait for it to wash him away. As he was doing that he heard shouting, someone saying "fat boy," it was probably Henry chasing Ben. He tried to catch up to them but they had already ran, besides he didn't want to get in trouble. Imagine all the nasty nicknames now. He decided to go to Bill's. As he took the long way round he finally got to his door half an hour later. He gently knocked on the door, *tap tap tap*. He heard loud stomps heading towards him. Eddie's Mum? No, just Bill running. As he opened the door he gave him a smile.
"I need to tell you something else." Bill looked at him as if to say wow you got a lot of things you need to tell me. He listened anyway, about how his parents were splitting up and how he doesn't know how to tell them he's gay. Bill offered for him to sleep round but he politely declined as his parents are probably wondering where he was. It was getting late, 5:59, he had to get back before curfew. As he ran the wind flowed through his curly hair, it made him smile. He quietly snuck in the house and upstairs to his room, waiting for his parents.
