“What were you thinking?” Mom is tapping her foot while huffing and puffing.

“Mom, it’s not like anything happened.” I tuck a fallen strand of hair behind my ear.

She rolls her eyes. “Yeah, you’re right, nothing did. That also might be because an officer caught you two before anything could happen. Can you honestly tell me you weren’t going to sleep with him?”

I drop my head.

“I thought so.” Her voice becomes soft. “I just don’t understand Skylar. What were you doing?”

“I don’t know. I kissed him and just didn’t feel like stopping.”

“Honey, I understand acting out because of Grams, but-”

I stand up off my bed. “Don’t bring her into this. Her death isn’t the reason why I almost had sex with Cooper. We were in a romantic setting and my heart just got a hold of me, nothing else.”

She shakes her head with disappointment. “I get you’re an adult now, but Skylar you have to be careful.”

“I’ve heard the sex talk before, I don’t need to hear it again.”

Mom gives me a look, but forces a smile. “I know, but you’re my baby girl.”

I smile. “I know what I’m doing, I promise.”

She nods in response. “Well, I hope so.” Pausing for a moment, she takes in a deep breath before telling me something else. “The funeral is tomorrow. It’s short notice, but all the funeral stuff was prearranged. I think that either afterwards or Sunday you need to head back to Columbia.”

“Mom-”

“Don’t argue. You have classes and there’s no need for you to stay. Cooper needs to get back too.”

I nod, then lick my lips before speaking. “Okay, I will.”

“Now, I’m going to go downstairs and cook. I don’t know what, but I am just simply going to cook something. I might even bake some goodies for tomorrow. You do whatever, but be at dinner.”

“I will.”

She kisses the top of my head. “I love you, Honey.”

“I love you too, Mom.” I manage to throw the words out there before she’s out the door.

Sighing, I throw myself backwards onto my bed. I can’t believe how big of an idiot I was last night. We were so close to doing it and a freaking cop caught us. Talk about embarrassing, especially in a small town where everyone knows everyone.

I was practically grateful, though. I didn’t want to lose my virginity in the front seat of an old car. Even if it was parked in front of a romantic setting. No one wants to lose their virginity the same day as a family member’s death. It’s wrong in too many ways.

Now I really hope Cooper feels the same.

Now is as good of a time as any, for here he is. He smiles and shifts his bottom jaw telling me “yikes” without a word. Quietly, he shuts the door behind him. Cooper walks over to the bed and sits down next to me, facing the wall.

“So?” He draws the single word out for seconds.

“Yeah, um about last night.”

“Sky, it would have been wrong.”

“Thank goodness,” I exclaim with a little too much enthusiasm.

“If and when we do it, you deserve more than a messy car. You deserve  romance. Now I’m not saying I wouldn’t have gone through with last night, but I don’t think you would have been able to resist the regret.”
