It takes me a few minutes, and a few yummy chips, but I eventually find Hunter pacing back and forth in front of the boy's toilets, hand tugging through his hair. I wait around the corner for a second to prepare myself for his wrath, and peer out from behind a row of lockers. His back is facing me, so I quietly step out and move to stand a few steps behind him.
He spins around angrily to continue his pattern, eyes cast downward and nearly walking into me. I swear he jumps a little when he notices my presence. His scowl deepens as his eyes meet mine.
Before he can say anything, I thrust out my hand with the container of hot (well, warm now) chips, one falling to floor in my haste. A few moments pass where Hunter glares at me, and I can feel my soul withering, and then his hand shoots out.
I flinched back violently as he snatches the chips, in my suddenly hazy vision his hand almost seeming like a strike towards my face.
I look away, avoiding his gaze as he grumpily shoves a few chips into his mouth. I take a deep breath, then open my mouth to speak.
"I hate you."
Turns out Hunter beats me to it.
Well, I was going to apologise, but apparently he has other plans.
"Pardon?" I will admit, I'm slightly offended. I mean yeah, I was annoying, but hate? That's a strong word to use on such a tiny person.
"You're selfish, frustrating, ignorant, and stupid. You keep talking to me even though I've made it pretty obvious I don't like you, you've ganged up on me with one of my best friends and goddammit your hair is so shiny."
The second after the last word leaves his mouth, Hunter clamps his lips shut, looking slightly red.
I'm reeling from his little speech, but looking at his blush and suddenly stiff composure, I decide to save him from some of the awkwardness.
"You think I'm stupid?" I pout, tilting my head dramatically, hands on my chest. "I followed, with chips, to apologise to you with the sincerest of apologies, and you insult my intelligence?"
His shoulders relax slightly when he realises I'm not going to call him out on his slip up. "Uh, yeah. Sorry?"
"Don't you start, I'm here to apologise to you. I know I've been a bit over the top, but you know I'm a little dramatic sometimes."
"Sometimes?" Hunter lets out an unattractive snort.
"Oi, I'm talkin' here." I shoot him a mock glare. "We've gone to school together a long time, you've seen how I act, so you should know by now how I am. Really, this is all your fault."
"I thought you said this was supposed to be something like 'the sincerest of apologies'?"
"I'm getting there, Mr Grumpy Pants. Let the girl speak, okay." I took a deep breath. "I'm sorry."
"That's it?"
"Yes, that's it. You can't get more original and sincere than that. Now hurry up and get that cute ass back into the cafeteria so nobody thinks I'm a bitch."
He blushes when I comment on his patootie, and quickly speaks to cover up. "But you are a b-"
"Ah, ah, ah." I wag my finger, telling him off.
We fall into step beside each other on our way back, Hunter chomping on the remaining chips, then throwing the cup away in a nearby bin outside the cafeteria. We stop there, and Hunter gestures for me to go in front.
"Ladies first."
I laugh, walking ahead then stopping to face him. "Are you sure? I wouldn't want to blind you with my shiny hair."
I wink before turning on my heel and heading back to the table, catching a glimpse of a bright red Hunter on the way.
