Chapter One- Being Betty

The neon lights flashed up 2-2. “It is a tie right now”, Roger Readerman, our commentator’s excited voice boomed from my right. But I didn’t turn to look at the commentary box or the audience.it was the final match of Riverton soccer league and we, players from the Meryton High were facing our arch rival Richmond High. There was just one more minute left and we didn’t want a tie and a penalty. Nor did the whole of river town. I was the only girl in our men’s soccer league.it was because they didn’t want to lose me for I had won back to back star player awards in the minor leagues we played here, last year.

Also, I had a sports special pass courtesy our town’s mayor, Mr.Haroy. So, it has been me and the boys who have been working for so many months to get ourselves into this position. I looked back and forth to see who was handling the ball right now and unfortunately, it was played between the Richmonds. I gritted my teeth and looked at Matt who was nodding at me. I knew what that meant, they want me to tackle the ball while they play the guy. I gave a quick nod and ran to the red haired guy who was looking between Kevin and Marshall, our guys to find a gap.

I gasped as I found him send a look to a blond behind him which made me realise their strategy. He was faking them as if to go right but his foot was turned left, indicating he was going to go left. The blond seemed to notice it too and he ran to the left.

How idiotic we have been to not notice that, that blond was the one who scored their two. He was the one we didn’t analyse a lot about,at all. And after all he had been their key player this match.

I frantically looked at Kevin hoping he would glance at me back. PleaseKevin, I kept muttering.

And he did. His grey eyes met my blue ones me questioningly while I gestured to him with my eyes. That blond’s their secret key, I wanted to say. But I could get that Kevin couldn’t understand it. Kevin was my best friend and we could communicate with our eyes. Butalas, luck wasn’t with us.

I couldn’t say that. Everyone were supporting us. My parents and Nicole were sitting on the benches to my right. Even her fragile granny and her unmarried aunt. I couldn’t disappoint them.

With that, I scouted to the blond and blocked the view between him and the red head.Matt must’ve got it as he tried to distract the red head and pull him off the blond’s direction. And the ball was passed to Kyle.

My happiness was short-lived because the blond who was two feet behind me very inconspicuously butted me to my left and ran after the ball making me fall to the ground, in the dirt. He nicked me in such a way that my fall was seemingly caused by my own imbalance.

The referee’s whistle pulled everyone short as the game stopped for a very small break. I couldn’t understand why they were stopping the game when there were just seconds to end it until I saw some blood next to me.

I had hit my head.

Hard.

In seconds our team medics were next to me and our team guys’ heads popped before my view. I could see they were frustrated and concerned. Kevin’s face was plastered only with the latter.

“Are you okay, Betty?”  He asked me as Rosa, our medic put some damp cloth over my forehead to stop the bleeding. I tried not to grimace at the smell of medicine that was poured over the cloth but I could feel the distaste on other’s faces too.

Wait, that was the blood that makes them grimace.

“That guy nicked me, Kevin! I didn’t fall on my own. He nicked me”  I told kevin.it was the truth and there was no way they had the guts to play rash and fowl on a final. Didn’t they want to give people who were watching a fair show?
