Welcome to Willow-Tree. It's a small historic town not far from Summerville, SC. It has a mixture of historic houses and some updated historic houses. It was a humid and rainy day when Amelia decided to step into the coffee shop. She wanted to start off her twenty-seventh birthday on the right foot. She wasn't going to let this weather dampen her spirits.
"Good morning Ben, guess what day it is?" I asked one of my friends who works at the coffee shop.
"Um, June first and it's a Saturday?" Ben replied as he filled up a customers cup with plain black coffee. I closed my eyes and just inhaled the smell of all sorts of coffee that was in the shop. I took my rain hood off and exhaled.
"Well yeah, it's June first and a Saturday but no that's not it silly. It's my twenty-seventh birthday! This weather is not going to make me frown." I said feeling cheerful. I honestly woke up on the right side of the bed.
"Happy birthday my dear Amelia. Here's your coffee sir and have a good day. Drive safe." Ben said in a happy tone to both of us. He's such a positive person. "Thank-you Ben and happy birthday to you miss." the customer said.
"Thanks Ben and thank-you Tom. I hardly recognized you with that new haircut of yours. It looks good. Your wife must be happy. Tell Lily that I'll be over later for our afternoon tea." I said as Tom was about to leave after he got his umbrella ready. Tom was the owner of a hardware store and his wife Lily is the owner of a woman's hair salon. She's also my best friends since they moved here four years ago. Tom waved bye at us as he stood in between the doorway to let the umbrella pop out. I waved back and then faced Bed. "So Ben, I would like to just have a medium coffee with cream and sugar please," I said to him with a smile. I couldn't help myself. I was just so happy.
"Not a problem sweetheart. That will be two dollars." Ben said and he winked at me. I hope he's not trying to hit on me. Sure he's attractive looking but his taste in clothes, I wouldn't be able to stand. Well, I'd be able to but ugh, he wears skinny jeans. I hand him the two dollars and he gets the coffee just like that. I know it was nothing fancy but he's fast. He does have help at a later time. It's still a little early here. Nine in the morning and he only has ten customers.
"Thanks, Ben. I'm going to stay awhile today." I told him. I usually just get coffee and go for a walk to get fresh air and exercise. I sit at a small table not far from the mystery man reading the newspaper. He has a black fedora hat on and a black suit. His hands look like they can strangle a man. His gold ring on his middle finger, looked like it could leave an imprint on someone's cheek. He peered over the newspaper and he met my gaze. His eyes are brown and cold. The gaze gave me a small chill down my back. I turned my gaze away from him to stare at my coffee. The look was getting too intense to stand. I peek up a little and I noticed he gave me a small devilish grin from the side of his mouth. I grab my coffee and take a small sip from it. Realizing the room I was in was getting colder and I wasn't warming up any. I got up, left the coffee shop and not even saying bye to Ben.
