Betty's POV
Ring!
School hours at Riverdale High were officially over for the day, which meant it was time for Pop's world-class burgers and service. Veronica said she needed to stop by her house to drop off her backpack, and Archie had to grab his wallet, so I just agreed to meet them there.
All day, I kept thinking about Jughead. If the Southside was bad, why did he seem so good? I remember telling him I'd be at the Chock'lit Shoppe today, and I looked forward to seeing if he would be here.
Stepping up the stairs that fronted our town's diner, I walked in and headed for the usual booth that my friends and I usually accompanied. "Ah, Betty!" Pop Tate greeted cheerfully. "Afternoon, Mr. Tate," I replied politely, a smile on my face.
I looked around for the mysterious greaser with whom I'd encountered the night previous, but he was nowhere to be found. I sighed disappointedly and took my seat. When Pop came around for my order, I decided to only order my usual milkshake, as I was still waiting for Archie and Veronica.
My strawberry milkshake in the purest shade of pink was set gently in front of me. As I moved my straw to my lips to take a sip, the bell on the door chimed, and I looked up, expecting to find my best friends, but what I found was much more interesting.
It was him; Jughead. We made eye contact, green meeting green as he headed over to the booth. "Miss Betty," he greeted, setting his elbow down on the top of the booth in front of me. He was wearing his same clothing from yesterday but neglected to wear his gray beanie on from last night.
"Mister Forsythe," I returned with a smile. "What do you say we motor outta here, go somewhere where it's just the two of us?" he offered. My smile quickly dropped as I said, "I can't. I'm waiting on a few friends; I wouldn't want to disappoint them."
"Just tell them you had to help...I don't know, cook dinner or something," Jughead suggested. I thought about it. I knew I couldn't lie to them, or anyone. It just wasn't in my nature. "I'm not one to lie," I admitted. "And I'm not one to get attached this way, but we see how that's working out," he replied with a raised eyebrow and a smirk.
"I guess I could think of something," I replied, standing up and straightening out my pink dress. "Oh, shoot!" I exclaimed at a normal voice level. "What? What is it?" Jughead asked. I looked at him and with my eyes widened.
"I don't have my wallet," I answered. "I best wait until Archie comes with his. I can't just leave without paying for my milkshake," I said, saddened that I couldn't leave with him. "Why do you need Archie," he paused, pulling something out of his back pocket. "When you have me?"
He lifted his hand to reveal a wallet of his own. I smiled gratefully as he set a dollar bill on the table, then came over to swing his arm over my shoulders as I looked at him and said, "You know it was only 25 cents, don't you?" "Consider it a tip," he said as we left the diner.
His motorcycle stood right outside the door as he motioned for me to come over. "Hop on," he said, get on himself and patting the spot behind him for me. I knew motorcycles were risky and I could get seriously hurt, but something about him made me think it was okay. I trusted him.
"What about a helmet?" I asked cautiously as I stepped closer. "Don't worry about that right now. I'll get you one as soon as I can," he replied. I finally fully complied, walking to the black vehicle and swinging on leg over the side and sitting down.
Jughead reached into his pocket and said, "Oh, I got you a little something, too," pulling out a little plastic bag of Jolly Ranchers and handing it to me. "My favorite. Thank you," I said graciously before unwrapping a little green apple candy and popping it into my mouth as the engine revved.
"No problem," he replied. "You know, I'm really quite fond of you," I said, readying myself for the ride by clutching the bag in my hand tightly and leaning forward onto his back and wrapping my arms around him, holding on for dear life.
He turned his head slightly with a smile and said, "I'm glad. Because I'm really quite fond of you."
Yay! This honestly is definitely one of my all time favorite chapters so far. I really hope you guys enjoyed, it's 11:27 pm on Monday night, which means I have school tomorrow, so I have to get to sleep, but once again, hope you enjoyed, if you did, you know what to do (hit the Vote and tell me your favorite part). Bye!
