from the moment she woke up,
y/n was already fed up with today.
she sighed loudly once she looked at the calendar.
she hated her birthday.
she often found herself grateful that people forgot.
she could only hope.
while she remained at home,
feeling a bit sorry for herself,
smalls was placing the flowers he bought the girl into a vase.
he placed the card onto the table,
writing carefully:
"happy birthday love. thanks for making me into the best person i could be, and an even better baseball player."
and being sure to add a heart at the end.
all the boys teased smalls for swooning over the girl,
but he himself thought the same.
there was no doubt about it;
scotty smalls was in love with y/n l/n.
y/n and smalls were the towns cutest couple.
smalls found himself smiling largely as he remembered their title in this town,
all while carrying y/n's birthday surprise.
"yeah, yeah! look! it's smalls going over to see his darling lover girl!"
yeah-yeah teased the boy.
smalls just rolled his eyes as he usually would,
continuing his walk.
"smalls! wait up!"
benny called,
catching up to the boy.
"give this to y/n for us."
smalls took it with what free fingers he had,
and finished with a grateful nod.
"yeah. okay. i'm sure she'll love it. thanks guys!"
after a while longer while walking,
he finally reached his destination.
y/n then heard the doorbell ring throughout her vacant house,
and slowly got up to answer.
"happy birthday, love!"
he cheered.
she brought her hands to her mouth in surprise,
but quickly let out a brightening laugh,
"thank you, my love!"
she soon let him inside,
where they trailed to the comfort of her bedroom.
"you're the best...wow,"
she spoke in shock,
placing the beautiful arrangement of flowers against her windowsill.
"anything for you. but..here, your presents."
he nodded as she sat herself back on the bed.
she opened the envelope from the boys first,
and laughed lightly at the scrawl against it.
"get you that new jersey you've been keeping an eye on ;).
happy birthday, idiot!
-benny, ham, timmy and tommy, denunez, squints, yeah-yeah, and bertram."
she took the money out,
counting it.
it was just enough for the jersey.
"oh, my."
she giggled as the money found itself in the drawer of her nightstand,
where she kept everything.
"and this."
smalls smiled proudly,
handing her his own card and box.
both which he bought with his own money.
once her eyes read the card,
she hugged him closely and surely.
"thank you so much, my love."
she breathed out,
still in shock,
and slowly pulled back.
once she untied the blue ribbon that held the box shut,
she gasped with joy.
a silver necklace laid against the padding.
"scott..."
she trailed off,
her mouth laying agape.
"do you like it?"
he asked,
sitting on the edge of her bed in anticipation.
she nodded her head all too quickly.
"are you crazy? i love it! so much!"
he helped her secure it around her neck,
where it laid to her chest beautifully.
smalls turned her around to admire every inch of her,
and the way the jewels heightened all her best features
"...you're beautiful, y/n,"
he spoke,
entirely amazed by her.
she hugged him tight once again and was sure to kiss his cheek.
"i love you,"
she admitted.
smalls was a bit surprised by the words,
but was quick to say them back.
truthfully and happily.
"i can't remember the last time i actually smiled on my birthday."
smalls chuckled and tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear,
then let the back of his fingers trail down her cheek.
"stick with me and i'll make sure you never stop smiling, i promise."
y/n closed the space between them and let their lips come together as one,
sealing their promise.

y/n knew this birthday was one she'd never forget.
as she admired the boutique on her windowsill,
she slowly began to count them out.
and with each individual flower came a number,
she gasped.

four sunflowers.
twelve purple anemones.
and sixty two red roses.

the day they began to date.
