y/n sat off into the corner of the bleachers,
her eyes trailing along the lines of the book while the sun beamed against her.
the boys loud cheers and groans erupted from around her,
but it still wasn't enough to draw her away from her book.
the boy she was dating,
benny rodriguez,
was now up to bat.
"this ones for you, y/n!"
the boy called out.
her eyes finally lifted from the page,
smiling with pure joy as the ball came in contact with the bat,
making a loud pop.
the ball flew into the air,
and his feet kicked the dirt.
benny touched first base,
then second base,
third base,
and finally slid into home in time.
benny managed to run all three bases,
while squints barely had the ball.
"game!"
ham called out before they all parted their ways to find water.
y/n grabbed the boys water bottles that she previously filled up,
and handed them to them.
"thanks y/n."
they all called out,
for she had take the time out of her day to refill all the bottles.
benny came up next to her in the sun,
leaning over to read the book she had propped open.
"winn dixie."
he read aloud with a genuine smile.
he noticed this would be the third time she's read the book.
all because benny had gifted it to her.
y/n grabbed the boys hand,
lacing their fingers as one.
"happy anniversary babe,"
he whispered,
soon kissing her cheek.
all the boys whooped and cheered for their favorite couple,
making her laugh and blush profusely.
"drive-in tonight?"
benny asked beneath his breath to prevent the boys from hearing and ruining their plans.
y/n nodded her head with a giggle,
"i'll be there."
he gave her one last kiss before returning to the game,
and leaving her to her book again.
***
benny was sure to drive his fathers car safely.
one wrong move,
and he'd be in deep shit.
him and y/n laid in the comfort of the car as the move played against the wide screen.
y/n's hand soon fell into benny's,
where the small contact erupted butterflies into the core of her being.
the two had had never felt so happy.
they enjoyed each other's company and seemed to be the missing piece to one another.
"i love you."
benny spoke at a soft level as the two figures on the screen kissed.
y/n looked at him in soft shock,
but was glad one of them had the guts to say it first.
her smile grew before she spoke,
"i love you more."
benny leaned in and let his lips fall to hers,
where they shared a sweet, pure kiss.
adrenaline rushed through his veins,
and nerves piled deep within y/n.
her lips were soft to his,
and sweeter than he'd ever imagined.
"woohoo! go benny!"
the voice from behind them erupted.
they both turned around,
giggling as squints and the gang held their thumbs up.
y/n shook her head in embarrassment,
but returned to the boy on her side.
"alright, mrs rodriguez,"
the boy teased,
but held his girl as close as possible.benny took a left on their way home,
the opposite way of y/n's house.
"benny. where are we going?"
she asked.
he turned his head,
holding her hand with a small smile.
"do you trust me?"
"where are we going?"
"answer me. do you trust me?"
"of course."
he nodded and let his lips brush the back of her hand before placing a small kiss there,
"good. you'll see."
the wind blew quickly and whistled in their ears,
blowing their hair back the faster he drove.
he turned to y/n for a split second,
letting her peaceful image calm his racing heart,
and soon the radio turned up.
"there goes my baby, moving on down the line!"
he sung softly.
y/n could feel her heart beating for the boy,
but she laughed and joined him in the song,
listening to their voices echo throughout the night.
y/n had been so caught up in the boy to her side that she didn't notice where they ended up.
the sandlot.
"benny-"
"i know. i'm not here to practice."
he laughed,
holding onto her hand to guide her.
she found herself back in the spot they met just a year ago.
she looked around in amazement,
remembering the first night they'd cross paths.
and just how far they'd come together.
the moon beaming off the boys skin and reflected in his eyes,
making y/n shiver.
she loved him more than anything,
she realized.
benny stepped closer with his hands still laced with hers.
"after a year of being with you, i've never been happier. not even on the field. you support me to no end, and i can't ever thank you enough for dealing with me. i love you. much more than anything this life has to offer. so i'm hoping this will make you just as happy as i am."
he spoke in his smooth voice,
soon reaching in his back pocket.
y/n's heart skipped several beats.
the jewelry box popped open,
and there laid a promise ring.
an inexpensive one of course,
but she loved it nonetheless.
she let out a soft laugh despite the tears gathering in her eyes.
"if i'm going too fast-"
"benny, i love it."
he silently celebrated and with a grin,
slipped the ring onto her finger.
she wrapped her arms around him,
the elation warming every inch her body.
"i love you, benny."
she mumbled into his ear.
"i love you much more, y/n."
benny's hand cupped her cheek,
leaning in for a much more passionate kiss.
one they'd never forget.
