Chapter 11- Ronnie Montgomery

I was so worried. I didn’t know Charlie’s parents all that well, but they were her parents! My best friend was about to lose her parents and there was nothing I could do. Mr. and Mrs. Adams had always been nice; they were just sort of distant. They either had to work, or take care of Charlie’s other siblings. Yet, they always tried their best to find time for their children. The one time I needed them the most, they were there for me, so I needed to be there for them. When Charlie said she wanted Niall to meet her parents while they could, it was obvious things were not looking good.

Niall and Charlie were in the hospital room for a really long time. After a while Niall walked out of the room with a drained face. He told us that Charlie wanted to spend some time alone with her family, which was completely understandable. Taylor and Liam were chatting while Louis and Zayn were goofing off. Niall looked heart broken as he paced the hospital hallway. I asked him if he was okay. "It just kills me to see her so up set." He said with a frown. "I wish there was something I could do." I knew exactly how he felt.

"Can I get you anything?" Harry asked looking concerned. "I'm fine." I told him with a weak smile. All I wanted to do was wait here for Charlie.

Taylor, Liam, Louis, Niall and Zayn had gone to get something to eat while Harry and I stayed outside of the room. I was sitting next to him with my head on his shoulder. He could tell I was anxious. I hated hospitals. Too many losses. I was so used to them, yet so tired of them. Harry tried to calm me down. “Everything will be okay babe.” He reassured.

“She’s going to lose her parents.” I said. “There’s nothing we can do to help her.” I looked at him. “When my brother died, Charlie and Tay were always there for me. But no matter how much they tried to help and comfort me, they could never heal me. Loss is something that can only be healed over time. I know there is nothing I can do for her accept be there for her. It makes me feel so powerless. We can’t help our best friend. We can’t take away that pain.” I had never told anyone that before.

Harry looked at me with serious eyes. He reached out to me and gently pulled my hair out of my face. Before he could say anything, Charlie opened the door. We both sprung out of our chairs. “You can come in now.” She said quietly. “Be prepared, okay?” When we walked in the room I was scared to look at them. Charlie’s five siblings were standing along the wall. They were all so young. I slowly turned my head to see Mr. and Mrs. Adams lying in hospital beds a couple feet apart from each other. Both of them had very serious injuries and they did not look like themselves.

“Ah Veronica. It’s so nice to see you...” Mrs. Adams said in a weak voice.

“How are you doing?” I said with a trembled voice. “I could definitely be better….” Mrs. Adams started to cough and the nurse instructed her to not speak.

“Ronnie….” Mr. Adams said in a low voice. I quickly walked over to his bed and took his hand. “You have always been such a strong independent young lady. Take care of my Charlie.” I started to cry. “I will. You guys were there for me when Jeremy died. You stayed with me at all hours of the night. You gave me rides when I needed them. You comforted me when I needed it the most.  All in all you were my back bone and you kept me on my feet when I felt like I was falling. That’s something I could never repay you for. Thank you both.”

Taylor and the rest of the boys walked in. Harry and the boys respectfully stayed by the door while Taylor said her goodbyes. The nurse told us that we needed to leave and only family members could stay. I hugged Charlie, her brothers and sisters and said my last goodbye to my friend’s parents. Once the seven of us were outside, Taylor and I were extremely sad. The boys were trying their best to comfort us. We decided we were not going to leave the hospital until Charlie left and that is exactly what we did.

. . . . . . . . . . . .

A week had passed and Charlie's parents had gotten better. The doctor said they were in no condition to leave the hospital, but they were going to recover over time. This ment we could go back to London! Charlie was to call her parents every day to make sure everything was going smoothly back home.

A few days ago, Liam asked Taylor to be hs girlfriend! Of course I was extremily happy for my friend, but now I just felt like the single fucking loner of our group. Why hadn't Harry asked me to be his girlfriend yet? He probably didn't even like me.

On the plane ride back to London, Harry and I had an entire row to ourselves. I was ready to talk to him about where we stood. "Harry?" I said with a nervous tone. "Can we talk?"

"Of course love. What's wrong?"

"Hhmm...It's just....now that Liam and Taylor and Niall and Charlie are dating, it's making me really wonder where we stand. I mean, do you not want tme to be your girlfriend?" I looked at him with sad eyes

He touched my chin and moved my head up to face his eyes. "Of course I want you to be my girlfriend. It's just that I really like you and I thought if we moved too quickly, that everything would just fall apart. I just don't want to lose you."

"How do you think I feel?! You are the biggest pop star in the world. You could get any girl you wanted. Someone prettier and smarter and funnier and hotter. I am constantly scared that I am going to lose you!"

He looked deep into my eyes and whispered, "Ronnie Montgomery, I am not going anywhere. Will you be my girlfriend?"
