Clawkit stared blankly in the direction of the commotion made in ThunderClan's camp. Excited squeals rang in the camp as three kits were engaged in a game of moss ball.
"Why don't you join them?" Lilyflower asked, concerned.
"I don't think they would want me to play with them," the oldest kit meowed, his dark amber eyes fixed on the queen.
"Just give it a try," she encouraged.
Clawkit nodded unenthusiastically, padding towards his foster littermates.
Sandkit, a cream tom with blue eyes, swiped the moss ball towards Cinderkit, another tom, who flung it into the sky when he recieved it. Wildkit, the only she-cat, sprung into the air, grabbing the moss ball with her teeth.
"Um... I... Can I join you?" Clawkit half murmured to himself.
"Four kits are too many," Wildkit pointed out. Her tone told him that she obviously did not want him to join in.
"The more the merrier," Sandkit objected, before licking at his tuft, which constantly stuck out. "You can join us."
"Who made you the leader of everything?" the grey tabby she-cat snapped, annoyed.
Clawkit noticed that Cinderkit made no comment, as usual. The dark grey tom never picked a side.
"What do you think, Cinderkit?" Sandkit asked expectantly.
"I... don't know," Cinderkit mewed hesitantly.
Both Wildkit and Sandkit let out an exaggerated sigh. That's something they could at least agree with, Clawkit mused.
"Nevermind then," Clawkit finally spoke up, walking off. He did not want to put the three littermates in a spot and cause conflict among them.
Perhaps it's better for everyone if I'm alone.
As the four moon old kit padded away, he became aware of a scorching glare on his pelt. Slowly, he turned around and his dark amber eyes met pained blue ones.
It was Hailstar, watching him from on top the Highrock. The ThunderClan leader said nothing, yet Clawkit flinched at his gaze. He never really met the reddish brown tom before, so he had no idea why it seemed that he hated him.
Feeling uncomfortable, the dark brown tabby tom quickly made his way to the elders' den. Specklebreeze always had great stories.
Clawkit headed in. The elders' den felt warm and cosy compared to outside, with Hailstar's piercing glare on him.
"Back again for more stories, Clawkit?" Specklebreeze, the oldest elder, asked warmly. She always liked his company.
On the other hand, Fireclaw ignored his presence. Specklebreeze explained that he was still grieving, so it would be better to leave him alone.
"I want to hear some stories about you," Clawkit mewed.
"All right then," the light grey she-cat meowed. "Come, take a seat."
As he settled on the ground, she began her story. "During my first Gathering as an apprentice, I met a RiverClan apprentice named Greenpaw. We quickly became good friends, but my littermate, Flowerpaw was concerned that it would affect my loyalty to our Clan."
Specklebreeze sighed. "I was really a mouse-brained apprentice. I refused to listen to her and even met up with Greenpaw at the border when I felt troubled. One day, I fell into the river after one of our meetings and she rescued me, bringing me to RiverClan."
Clawkit widened his eyes and continued listening.
"The RiverClan leader allowed me to rest in RiverClan for a while until I was fit to travel. While I had fun with Greenpaw, ThunderClan was in a frenzy. Left with no choice, Flowerpaw told Birchstar - ThunderClan's leader - about Greenpaw and I. ThunderClan invaded RiverClan territory, believing that I was kidnapped. I was dragged back to ThunderClan, where I confronted Flowerpaw about it. Despite what she said, I was furious."
The light grey she-cat let out another sigh, looking rather upset. "It created a rift between us littermates. When I realised that I was in the wrong, I apologised to her and promised that I would help protect her kits. She forgave me."
"That's great that you two made up," Clawkit commented happily.
She smiled. "Yeah. I bet she's looking over us in StarClan now."
"What happened to Greenpaw?" he asked.
"She went on to become leader, serving RiverClan to the fullest until her death," Specklebreeze mewed. "Even after all that, we are still friends."
Clawkit felt a pang of grief for the old she-cat. She lost so much, yet she was still contributing to ThunderClan.
"The moral of the story is that you must cherish your relationships and understand the significance of them," she concluded.
"Thank you for the story, Specklebreeze!" Clawkit mewed.
"It's no problem. It's nice to have young cats around sometimes," the elder sighed wistfully. "Go out and enjoy your youth, Clawkit. It's what your mother would have wanted."
The dark brown tabby kit nodded. Emberstorm, his father, often told him stories about his mother, Honeyfrost. He said that she was very energetic and loyal to the Clan, serving it until her last breath.
However, Clawkit recently realised that Emberstorm visited him less frequently. When he asked about his father, they would say that he was on some patrol.
This time I'm going to find him and ask him about it.
Clawkit returned to the nursery where Lilyflower was still watching her kits play - while keeping an eye on him as he approached her.
"Lilyflower, do you know where's Emberstorm?" he asked hopefully.
Her blue eyes were gentle - but strangely sad - as she faced the kit. "He's over there, by the medicine cat den."
"Thanks!" With that, Clawkit rushed towards the medicine cat den as if his life depended on it.
"Emberstorm!" he called, his eyes brimming with emotion. It happened a lot, especially when he thought about the days his father did not visit him. Despite his efforts to avoid those thoughts, the dark brown tabby tom would be reminded of them.
The ginger tom was taken aback when he spotted Clawkit by the entrance of the medicine cat den.
"What's wrong?" Emberstorm questioned, puzzled.
"I-I..." Clawkit finally got the opportunity to talk to his closest kin, but the words he was desperate to say became lost on the tip of his tongue.
"I just want you to spend more time with me."
