3 months later
"hey kristen wait up"
liza runs over to her best friends as she walks on the sidewalk. school totally killed kristen's mood today and she just wants to go home and sleep.
"i don't need a ride thanks" she says over her shoulder, not wanting to stop. liza moves in-front of her so she can't go anywhere.
"when is he back?" she asks nervously. david decided not to go to Switzerland but instead vacation in france for a few months. said he needed space and time.
"today" she says before moving around her friend and walking off.
liza stand in the middle of the sidewalk with confusion written all over her face. she knows since that night under the pier, kristen and herself have grown apart. mainly because kristen was upset and angry that liza would do a thing like that but also because she left david when he needed her most.
after dinner, liza lays on her bed, unable to fall asleep. she doesn't know why but she can't shake the feeling that somethings not right. maybe it's because she hasn't been back to her spot since that night or maybe it's just because she knows david's back in town.
she quit her job as the restaurant and hasn't seen any of david's family members since. not even little toby. the only places liza goes now is the new food truck and school. other than those places she sits at home under her blankets, wallowing in self pity.
at 11pm liza decides she's had enough of staring at her ceiling. she grabs her car keys that are next to her bed and throws on a sweatshirt that covers her shorts slightly. her shoes are waiting for her by the door when she walks down stairs.
fresh air hitting her face with the scent of sea salt and sand makes her feel warm inside. she feels at home and where she belongs. liza walks down under the pier and her heart skips a beat as it always does when she sees him, he's sitting there with a bottle of beer and not a care in the world.
"you know, this is still my spot" she says lightly with a hint of laughter in her tired voice. david turns his head to look at her and instantly a smirk is on his face. he climbs to his feet, walking over and hugging the tiny girl. liza melts into him. her nose filling with his scent, her heart filling with that same feeling she always gets when he's with her. it's like nothings changed yet at the same time, everything's changed.
"how was france" liza asks as they break away from each other. he shoves his hands in his hoodie pockets while nodding his head.
"france was nice. got a lot of really good treatment there. the slopes were nice even though i almost broke my entire body twice" he chuckles nervously.
"wait? treatment. i though it was only a vacation. kristen told me it was only a vacation" she says. somebody wasn't telling her the truth and she wants to know why.
"i asked her not to say anything because i didn't want you to get your hopes up incase the treatment failed but luckily....i didn't and my cancer it's uh. gone?" he explains, a smile playing on his lips.
liza's smile however doesn't compare to his. it's toothy and wide and flowing and sparkling and huge. she still has questions but he did it. she's proud of him.
"can i hug you again" she cries, this time happy tears. he laughs but nods, opening his arms for her to jump in. she does and wraps her arms around his neck while his hands rest under her thighs.
they've both missed this. each other's company and being with each other. making contact with each other. loving each other. it's all been so hard without the other.
after a few minutes, they both take a seat on the sand, david hands liza a beer and she takes it with a grin on her face.
"so how's joe" david asks after taking a gulp of the beverage. liza perks up at the mention of his name.
"his grandson and him are road tripping through the states with the food truck. joe said he always wanted to do that sort of thing. i miss him but he's happy so it's nice" she explains, resting her head on david's shoulder.
"what about you?" he asks her. "are you happy"
liza thinks for a moment. she wasn't happy when he was gone and she wasn't happy before he arrived. truth is she's always been happy when she's with david , she just didn't pay attention to it because she was so focused on the negative things that she didn't take time to appreciate the good things like hawaii and the many nights here in their spot. she was happy. she is happy.
"as long as you're in my life dobrik, ill forever be happy" she smiles. david takes her hand in his, noticing that she's still wearing the ring. he doesn't know however that she's never taken it off.
"i have to tell you something" he smirks, turning around a little to face her. she rolls her eyes and let's out a sigh.
"more bad news?" she questions. half joking half not.
"depends on how you see it" he jokes.
david moves a strand of her hair out of the way before leaning in and kissing her. liza doesn't need to think twice before kissing him back. she begins to straddle him, his hands finding their way under her shirt, resting on her hips.
"i've fallen in love with you elizabeth koshy" he mumbles between kisses. liza stops and pulls away to look at him. she smiles her usual glowing smile.
"and i've fallen in love with you too david dobrik" she admits, kissing him quickly again before reaching back and grabbing the beer bottles.
"to us. and our crazy, exhausting, emotional rollercoaster of a summer. our first summer. together. may it be the first of many to come" she announces, holding up her bottle.
david holds up his, kissing her cheek before saying.
"our first summer"
the end.
