⠀⠀ "Timberkit, Adderkit, Jaykit, time to come in!" Hiddenfrost called to her now one moon old kits who were learning their way around camp. They were being escorted by Ashkit and Sweetkit, who obviously enjoyed being bigger than someone.⠀⠀ "Coming, Mama!" Adderkit yowled, stumbling towards the nursery with Timberkit. Jaykit nodded again. She still hadn't talked, and several cats believed she was mute. Slowly, the white pawed kit padded towards her mother. An apprentice, Rockpaw, charged blindly through the entrance, directly towards Ashkit.
⠀⠀ "Ashkit, look out!"
⠀⠀ Everyone stopped what they were doing. Jaykit had said something. Ashkit darted out of the way of the clumsy apprentice and ran towards his den mate.
⠀⠀ "You talked!" He mewed excitedly. "Hiddenfrost, Jaykit talked!" The queen had heard her kit yowl and she was out before anyone else.
⠀⠀ "I see that." She purred, overjoyed.⠀⠀ Jaykit nodded, her tail tip twitching in anxiety. Everyone's eyes were turned on her. Her father, Boulderclaw, trotted in.
⠀⠀ "Yes everyone. A kit talked. We all do. Leave her alone she's not a freak." He hissed, obviously annoyed. Surprised, the clan turned their attention back to their duties.⠀⠀ Hiddenfrost padded towards her mate.
⠀⠀ "Thank you." She whispered, licking his ear. He nodded and gave her a small smile.⠀⠀ "Wow, Jaykit. Thanks." Ashkit breathed as he sat by her. She nodded, staring at her paws. "Umm... when did you learn to talk?" He murmured. She blinked.
⠀⠀ "The same time as the others. Talking is just... I don't know. It's not too bad I guess." The kit shrugged.⠀⠀ "Time to come in!" Ripplesong called from the nursery. "You too, Jaykit." Ashkit began trotting towards the nursery. Jaykit followed.
⠀⠀ When she got inside, her mother greeted her with a purr. Her brothers were curled up next to each other. They were quite the pair. One striped, one swirled, both with a similar face.
⠀⠀ Jaykit curled up next to Timberkit and closed her eyes. She realized her siblings hadn't heard her speak yet. I'll surprise them tomorrow. She thought blissfully as her lake blue eyes drooped shut.
⠀⠀ She woke up earlier than usual to quite a scene. Her father was ordering groups of cats to do patrols.
⠀⠀ "Blossomfall, Quickstep, Darktail, and Spottedpaw," he began. "Go patrol the west border. Shadowclan has been coming rather close to our borders, and Willowstar doesn't want them any closer." He mewed. The small group nodded and padded out of the entrance.⠀⠀ The tabby noticed his daughter and motioned for her to come out of the den. She trotted forward, giving him a faint smile.
⠀⠀ "Hi dad." She mewed. A wide grin spread across his muzzle.
⠀⠀ "I see you're talking." He purred, giving her a lick on the ear. She nodded and licked a paw.⠀⠀ Ashkit poked his head out of a bush.
⠀⠀ "Hi Jaykit!" He squeaked excitedly, tumbling out of the nursery.
⠀⠀ "Hi Ashkit." She mewed.
⠀⠀ "Why are you up so early?"
⠀⠀ "I don't know." She shrugged, glancing back as her father was called by Willowstar. They began talking about prey and rogues and all stuff leaders and deputies talked about.⠀⠀ "Wanna go see the elders?" He pleaded, his short tail curling in excitement. With a nod Jaykit got to her paws. The pair padded to the elders' den and almost died of laughter.
⠀⠀ Crabby old Barktooth had a thorn in his butt, and Icepaw was trying to yank it out. Sunnyeye and Kinkear were holding back laughter as the old tom huffed.
⠀⠀ "This is what you get when you don't clean out the moss properly." He scolded the new apprentice. She rolled her blue eyes and continued tugging. It soon came out and she fell back, getting her silver pelt covered in dirt. Barktooth fell flat on his face, grumbling the entire time.⠀⠀ "Hello kits, how are you?" Sunnyeye managed to say between laughing as she helped Icepaw up while Kinkear nudged Barktooth to his feet.
⠀⠀ "Great now that we saw that." Ashkit answered. The pair slowly calmed down as their laughter died out.⠀⠀ "Do you need any food?" Jaykit asked, hoping to help. The elders nodded in unison, and the kits darted off, coming back with a two voles and a mouse.
⠀⠀ "Thank you." Kinkear purred.⠀⠀ "Do you have any stories?" Ashkit mewed, his eyes round with curiosity.
⠀⠀ "Why don't you ask Barktooth? He used to be the bravest warrior of them all." Sunnyeye purred.
⠀⠀ "Please tell us a story!" The kits begged.⠀⠀ "Alright. Well," the old tabby began. "When I was a young warrior, there was a badger attack. We were all terrified because badgers were heading towards the nursery, so my friend and I leaped forward and fought that thing to the death, with a few other warriors of course because we aren't kitty pets and afraid of everything." The tom puffed out his chest, green eyes beaming.
⠀⠀ "Whoa." They gasped.
⠀⠀ "Someday I'm going to fight a badger!" Ashkit squeaked.⠀⠀ Jaykit's siblings poked their heads out of the hole.
⠀⠀ "Hi Jaykit! We don't know if you can talk. I don't think you can and I'm so sorry..." Timberkit began sadly. "So Adderkit and I have decided to come up with a sign language for you to talk with."⠀⠀ "What makes you think I can't talk?" Jaykit mewed, laughing. Her brothers gasped.
⠀⠀ "You were... then you... not talk... WHAT?!" Adderkit yowled, hugging her. She laughed and wiggled away. It was a great day. Even another litter of kits had been born. There were two, both she cats. The silver one was named Flickerkit, and the sand colored kit was named Cloverkit.
