his eyes were so unique,
unlike anything i have ever seen!
i don't know why
or how
they looked completely different.

his eyes were not a shade of gray
yet they were dark,
and they were warm.
how else was i to describe it?
it was only fitting;

his sugary smile
enhanced his warm eyes.
the way they
squinted and sparkled
like a pair of
small crescent moons.

he turned to me
and extended his arm.
i glanced awkwardly at it and soon realized
fuck, i had to shake it.
"hi theo. i'm oliver."

"oliver."
your name is oliver.
does he know what his name means?
peace and beauty and dignity.

and his eyes
they seemed to sparkle with tenacity and
i don't know,
they were just so unique.
what is it?

"well..." i said, "should i be giving him a tour?"
the principal nodded.
i escorted oliver out of the beehive
and into the jungle.

***

i show him around campus,
pointing out the lockers and such.
"do you know how to open a locker?"
i asked him.

oliver grew a smirk.
"i think i know how to open a locker,
thank you very much."

my cheeks were so red
they put roses gardens to shame.
theodore miller, you're an idiot!
"sorry," i muttered.

oliver chuckled.
there was
joy
in his laughter.
it was soft and airy and pleasant.
"i'm just teasing you.
you're cute when you blush."

i tried to make small talk.
"why did you transfer here?"
i sputtered out.
was that too daring?

"eh, got expelled," he confessed.
so he's a rebel boy,
i pondered.

"how come?" i furrowed my eyebrows.
so what?
i was curious.
no harm in that.
anyone would be too.

oliver raised an eyebrow.
"you really wanna know?"
i nodded my head slowly, wearily.

oliver whispered in my ear
he was a bit too close for comfort.
"i was at a field trip to the aquarium and managed to push my entire class into a dolphin tank."

my expression grew blank
and i playfully slapped him on the shoulder.
he and i shared an infectious laugh
that roared throughout the empty hallway.
"you almost had me," i teased.

the bell rang suddenly
its shrill noise
telling us to wrap it up.
his warm eyes twinkled
ever so slightly.
"what's your next period?" he asked.

"calculus," i told him.

"ah. sit with me at lunch?" oliver grinned.
i smiled back. "yeah. i'll see you then."

we parted ways,
but his eyes were still etched in my mind.
they were truly remarkable.
what tone was it?

his eyes were dark and warm.
my mind wandered,
and then it hit me.

i think
it was a color?
i've heard about them, but,
i've never seen it
until now.

***

i pushed my way through a crowd of fellow peers
gripping my tray and pursing my lips.
i don't see him.

maybe he was joking.

i turn away from the cafeteria,
ready to sit outside
under an oak tree
and lose my senses
in the sound of music.

"theo!" a familiar voice called out.
my head turns and
i smile a little as oliver waves at me.
picking up my pace,

i sat next to him.
"you're such a slowpoke,"
oliver teased.

"sorry." i twiddled my thumbs under the table.
"how are your first classes so far?"

oliver flashed a smile.
"they were... surprisingly good.
but oh my god!
let me tell you
about this one kid in fourth period..."

oliver continued to rant;
i felt myself smirk a little.
"anyways, that's the end of that story,"
he chugged his bottle of water.
"do you wanna hang out sometime? maybe saturday? you seem like a pretty cool dude."

i smiled a bit too bright.
"sure. here, i'll give you my number."
he pulled out his phone
as we exchanged numbers.
my soul giggled.

brown.
his eyes are brown.
