CHAPTER FIVE
isabella ❞

BY THE TIME lunch had rolled around, Hayden felt better than she had earlier, feeling the excitement tearing away at her mind. She ached to get home; to have the day with her parents that happened rarely. As she took a seat next to Mike in the cafeteria, she turned to see Bella at Edward's side. Bella motioned for her to sit at the table with them, Hayden finding herself in hesitation.

"I . . . I'm gonna sit with Bella today," Hayden says to Mike and Angela just as Jessica arrives. "I'll see you guys later."

Mike looked disappointed to say the least, but Jessica looked satistfied with her decision as she sent Hayden a wave. Hayden disregarded her, only focused on her steps as she moved to sit with the Cullens.

"Hey," Bella says as the girl takes the only empty seat. "Having fun over there?"

"You saved me from the fun," Hayden chuckles, sitting her tray down in front of her. "Eric was about to start on ideas for the new paper, and Angela's so caught up in him that it hurts to breathe."

"I feel you," Bella nods, Emmett finally looking to Hayden. "They've always been that way."

"So you decided to sit with us?" Emmett raises an eyebrow.

"Yes," Hayden clears her throat, looking at the floor as her cheeks heat up. "I'd rather be over here than with them."

"I'm Alice," the girl with the pixie cut chimes in, cutting Emmett off without hesitation. "And this is Jasper. That's Rosalie and Joseph . . . and I assume you already know Emmett."

Hayden could recognize Alice and Jasper from the day before; when they had caught her in the gym. But as for Joseph and Rosalie, she hadn't saw them around the school at all. Rosalie wouldn't meet her eyes, but Joseph did with a polite smile, his bright blue eyes accentuating against his pale complexion.

"Emmett is a handful," Hayden sighs, shooting Emmett a short glare. "But his handwriting- I have to admit- is the definition of perfection."

Emmett rolls his eyes jokingly. "Just because you write like a slob doesn't mean that mine is all that great. You should get help for that. It's not healthy to get confused over what you write."

"Excuse me," the girl scoffs, her jaw dropping. "I do not write like a slob. And I'll have you know that I can read my notes easily."

"Is that why you wanted to borrow mine?"

Edward snickers at the comment, Bella right with him. Hayden only huffs in annoyance, sinking down into her seat. "This is considered bullying, and it's rude."
