A bus turns down the gravel driveway and shudders its way up the path to the school. The sudden jolting wakes one boy up. He unfurls himself from the old vinyl seat and the notebook sitting in his lap almost tumbles off, but he catches it just in time. The page it's open to is covered with sketches, little portraits of people with odd features and shadowy beasts with elongated limbs. He shuts the sketchbook as the bus stops at the end of the gravel drive. The students slowly file off of the bus and a teacher calls out names for home groups. The boy's name, Ax McNialláin, is called for the second group of year twelves. One of the girls in his group, Cassidy Jones, looks around and shifts nervously.
