Chapter Two
"Today is a very busy day." Mrs.Dunham strained. The fat under her chin bulging as she speaks.
"We have test corrections, final exam review, and a few power points to go over before I can even assign you your homework." She continued."In order to do all of that, I need everyone on task." Mrs.Dunham announced.
I was sitting in the back corner of the room near the broad window. Sunlight clearly seeping through. As I glanced across the room, I catch Melissa snickering about something Shelby was saying.
"So, to start things off, let's take attendance." Mrs.Dunham's voice shadowed Shelby's. Melissa is one of my closet friends, especially in Global Studies. We have always been this way, close, since we were just freshmen. Now as Juniors, we still have that proximity.
"Carter, would you like to pass these back?" Mrs.Dunham asked assertively. Carter got out of his seat and made his way to Mrs.Dunham's desk nonchalantly. Carter was attractive, in a Abercrombie and Fitch model type of way. Dark brown eyes and dark brown slick hair. His facial features were gorgeous. Carter played Varsity Soccer for Ridgeview.
He made his way down each aisle distributing papers to each desk getting a "Thanks" every here and there or a small smile. I murmured a "Thanks" as he handed me back my test. Like always I got an A. Social Studies was one of my stronger subjects.
As we checked our test, I stole glances at the clock. Finally, we got assigned our homework. I shredded through the book, finding all my answers in a timely manner. As soon as I finished I dropped my pencil and stretched out my arms, yawning.
Out of nowhere, a paper airplane through across the room from Carters desk and landed on mine. With little hesitation, I unfolded the airplane.
Hey,
Whats the answer to number four?
Me and Carter don't really talk to each other in school. Once I talked to him at the Ridgeview Homecoming game but that sums it up. I grabbed my notebook, teared out a piece of paper and scribbled:
I don't know, my answers may not be what your looking for.
I closed up the note and passed it down a couple of seats until it reached Carters. I wasn't expecting a response, let alone another airplane.
Your not fooling me, I saw your grade on that test.
Reluctantly, I replied." No talking back there." Mrs.Dunham said eyeing Shelby. I carefully passed the note along until it reached Carter.
My test grade is nothing to get your nose in.
I stole another glance at the clock. The bell should ring in five minutes. Carter stood up with all the notes we passed back and forth and tossed them in the recycling bin at the front of the room.
Carter crusaded down my aisle with a single note in his hand. He made a big deal of dropping the note on my desk, and a even bigger deal of walking away with his shoulders stooped and his hands in his pockets.Carter was wearing dark jeans with a white hoodie. He was also wearing his Orlando Magic snapback backwards displaying a few locks of his hair. I cunningly opened the note.
I'm Carter James.I can get my nose into whatever I would like to.
I couldn't help but burst out laughing at his blunt reply earning me the evil eye from Mrs.Dunham. He's definitely changed since freshmen year. I scribbled my reply.
Then maybe Mr.James, you should stick your nose in that textbook, and look up the answer yourself.
This time, I was the one to walk over to Carters' desk. I gave him a closed mouth smile as I placed my note on his desk. As I made my way up the aisle as the bell rung.
At lunch all Grace, Kelsey, Melissa and I could talk about was first hour with Carter. "Sounds to me likes he's crushing!" Yelps Kelsey. Grace starts eating her soup. Listening closely to hear every detail.
"I glanced across the room to see Carter handing you a note!" Melissa pipes in. "Shelby and I thought it was his digits!" She continues. I couldn't help but crack up at that one. I wouldn't describe myself as ugly. My eyes are big, and hazel. I possess long dark brown hair that ends exactly at my elbows. I just wouldn't expect Carter James to all of a sudden like me.
"You guys! Calm down!" I say once I catch my breath.
"He just wanted the answer to number four." I say like its the most obvious thing in the world.
"He could've gotten that from me then!" Melissa says in astonishment.
Oh come on Marie!" Barges in Grace after shes heard enough deeds. "He totally likes you."
A smile crept to my lips as I ate a fry.
Kelsey slurps her drink while wiggling her eyebrows impersonating Carter. I nearly choke on my fries. Grace snaps a picture of what's suppose to be four average teenage girls. Instead, we all turn out looking like lunatics at a lunch table. Kelsey shrieks in disgust.
"No. Don't send that one!" She pleads eyeing herself in the photo. It isn't our best photo.
"Don't worry. It'll be gone in six seconds." She says calmly. Kelsey puts her head in her hands.
Later in the day Kelsey and I headed to sixth hour.
We opened the gym doors after changing into our tees and shorts. I mentally slam my head taking in our surroundings. I'm pretty sure Kelsey does the same.
Mr.Kucharski, the gym teacher, has us doing various leg workouts in the blazing heat.
"This is inhumane." Kelsey muttered.
We were doing lunges around the track.
"UP. DOWN.UP.DOWN." Mr.Kucharski yelled in a monotone.
"My gosh is this boot camp?" Kelsey said harshly.
I couldn't help but laugh. Mr.K was acting like he was a commander in the US Army.
I wondered when we actually would start running.
I usually would have track after school, but it ended last week. Track was my all-time-favorite sport.I always felt adrenaline when I reached the finish line. It was as if all my energy saved up before the race poured out at end.
As we rounded the straight away, Mr.K had us sit down along the lanes, and stretch.
"Its very important to do stretches after every single workout." Mr. K said loudly.
"We only did lunges!" Kelsey said loud enough for the person in front of us to spin around.
"After stretches, we will do jumping jacks, then close with squats and more stretching."
By the time we finished all of Mr.K's silly exercises, it was almost time to go home.
Kelsey and I walked towards the gymnasium. Both glad the hour passed.
"So your heading to the mitten state huh?" Kelsey asked in a goofy tone.
"Yeah I guess so." I went on. " I have no idea what the weather is like there."
The weather in the Springs is pretty easy to go with. Only changing occasionally each season. Never to cold in the winter never scorching hot in the summer.
"You'll figure it out." Kelsey said as she opened the door to the gymnasium.
We were going to go shopping but decided against it since we can't seem to sneak it in between our schedules. I'm leaving early Friday.
Later at home, I packed all my belongings for the trip. Bringing both a handful or shorts, and a handful of jeans.
Hey :) hope you enjoyed!! Next chapter will be good
