The reader may or may not need to be there for every word of a conversation. It’s okay for the reader to enter the conversation where the important parts start and skip the parts where they’re just talking about the weather.
That’s allowed. Even encouraged sometimes.
This tactic can be especially useful at the beginning or end of chapters. In fact, I happen to really like books where the first line comes from the middle of a conversation. It makes me feel like I’m really jumping into things.
