Chapter 1 - John

"...the 35 year old male allegedly stabbed a eighteen year old girl, 7 times. The victim's mother is being treated at the County Hospital after receiving multiple stab wounds to her face and other areas of her body. We have no further information at this stage..."

After months of planning and secret meetings it was finally time for the 15th annual celebration party. The town residents have been planning for 3 months to host the biggest celebration seen in years. The small town of Creede which had about roughly 600 residents. Everyone knew just about everyone and everyone's business thus secrets was almost unheard of. The celebration was held for the town's mayor, John Waterson. The town residents all loved John for his kind and helping nature and all thought him to be a great mayor which was one of the reasons for the celebration. The other was to celebrate his freedom...

John has been charged with 1st degree murder. It came as a shock to everyone watching the news channel on 21 November to see the middle-aged man being handcuffed and lead to the back of a police van accused of murdering a 18-year-old girl. The heart-warming smile usually illuminated on his face was gone, replaced by a worried and sad expression. He had dark circles under his eyes and the wrinkles at the corner of his eyes was more apparent than ever. He looked 10 years older. His usually groomed dark brown curls laid messy on his head and his eyes were a darker shade of brown. The twinkle was gone replaced with emptiness, embarrassment and shame.

Some who saw the news and lived in neighbouring towns of Creede Colorado, made their own assumptions. They made it well known that they doubted John's innocence and the rumours spread like wild fire. The town's residents, however refused to believe the reports and were infuriated when some of the rumours reached their town. They felt sorry for the man and furious at the person who accused him. Therefore every year in honour of the mayor, they would host this annual celebration to not only celebrate the mayor's freedom and innocence, but also to punish the person who accused the mayor. To remind her that nothing ever came from her false accusations. To rub salt in her wounds.

It has been 15 years since the murder and there was not a single person who still doubted John in or outside of town. John was never arrested because there was never any concrete evidence besides the story told by the victim's mother, Mrs. Yarnold. After years even her stories died along with all other rumours. She was cast aside in town. No one dared visit or even talked to her. She became the town's "crazy woman" and the target for the taunts of the town's children. The celebrations continued regardless, and John was now more respected than ever before.
