Ella was bored. Heading towards Berchtesgaden, they had now encountered open opposition. In the shape of a roadblock.
The Germans had blown up half the mountain side and a huge pile of massive boulders was strewn across the road, creating an impassable wall. And instead of turning back and finding another way into the town, they were stuck here, waiting for the engineers who took their sweet time to reach them.
The guys were milling about, just as bored as her. Sighing, she scratched at a spot on her cheek and settled back down. She was lying on the back of one of the trucks, basking in the warm spring sun. From her position, she had a perfect view of the boys who were trying their hand at demolition.
Watching Chuck and Christenson advance, both carrying a bazooka, the girl couldn't help but snort in amusement. "A few sticks of dynamite would be helpful", she commented to Speirs who was leaning against the truck.
He glanced over at her and responded: "Or the goddamn engineers." He wasn't one to sit around and twiddle his thumbs. He was a man of action and she could almost see the frustration and boredom radiating off him.
She giggled, pulling herself up into a sitting position, letting her feet dangle over the edge. "Well, if it were me, I would just climb over that pile of rocks and be done with it", she said, brushing a few stray locks away that the light breeze blew into her face. In the sunlight, the caramel tint of her hair seemed to glow.
He chuckled, patting her shin. "The entire company would follow you", he agreed.
A loud explosion caught their attention. A cloud of dust wafted away in the wind. Some debris flew through the air and a tree tumbled down the ravine. Other than that, the boulders stayed where they were. Nobody was really surprised.
The brunette hopped down from the truck and stretched, arching her back. "How about a tank?", she suggested with a grin, watching as Webster and Malarkey piled up a bunch of grenades. "A tank would do the trick."
Speirs threw her an amused smirk. Several weeks of no real fighting had lifted a huge weight of the CO's shoulder and he had become more relaxed, just like the rest of the men. "We'll see", he remarked ominously, sending her a mischievous glance before pushing away from the truck and heading straight for Major Winters' jeep.
The ranking medic snickered to herself and, having no other place to be, ambled over to Grant and Christenson.

"Hi guys", she greeted them with a bright smile, coming to a stop next to them.
"Hey Shorty", they responded with twin expressions of boyish excitement.
Web and Malark came hurrying back from the blockade, gleeful grins on their faces.
"All set", Malarkey declared, crouching down. The others followed suit with the exception of Christenson, who readied his bazooka and took aim.
"You do know this won't really do any good, right?", Ella spoke up, already knowing the answer but deciding to ask anyways.
"So?", Malarkey questioned with a shrug, still grinning. "At least it's fun."
She laughed. "Yeah, I thought as much."
They were bored and they were actually doing something semi-productive. And he was right, it was quite entertaining to try and blast through the blockade. After all, they had more than enough supplies.
