VERA NOLES—

Vera laid on her bed the next day. She sat in silence with a book in her hand. She'd already gotten ready for the day, wearing a cream and brown striped shirt with light-washed denim overall shorts. She paired them with her usual pale yellow converse. She wasn't sure what the day had in store for her, that was until there was a knock at her door.

Vera thought nothing of it. Her Gran always had the occasional visitors who she gossiped with. "Vera, come down darling." She heard Carol call up to her. Placing her bookmark snug in the book, Vera hopped down the steps and to the front door. She was met with the familiar faces of her new friends, Richie, Bill, Stanley, Eddie, and Ben.

"Hey, what are you guys doing?" The girl asked, walking in front of her Gran. The boys looked at each other waiting for someone to speak up and tell the girl their plans. "W-well, We w-wanted to know if you wanted to go to the q-quarry with u-us," Billy spoke, being the one to break the silence.

Vera turned to her Gran with a hopeful look on her face. Carol's eyes travelled between the boys, examining them all. "Can I speak to you in the kitchen Vera." Her Gran spoke sternly not breaking eye contact with the boys. Raising an eyebrow in confusion the young girl agreed.

Vera followed her grandmother into the kitchen like a lost puppy. "What is it, Gran?" Vera spoke worriedly not knowing if something was wrong. "I've heard things, Vera. Things that the other ladies in town have told me." Vera's posture fell as she knew where this was going. "Gran, any rumours you heard are lies." She was cut off. "I will not have my granddaughter be named the slut of the town Vera! You need to stop hanging out with those boys." The girl shook her head in disgust.

"I only met them yesterday Gran! If anything shouldn't you be happy I've actually made some friends?" Her grandmother scoffed. "Not if you had to do things with these boys to gain their friendship!" Vera's tone began to get annoyed and louder. "Out of everyone in this goddamn town, I thought you'd understand... But no, turns out you're just like all those other snobby assholes who can't seem to notice a girl who's never even been kissed before!"

Vera continued not allowing her Gran to speak anymore. "Now, I'm going to hang out with my FRIENDS. F-R-I-E-N-D-S. Hear that? Friends. And I don't give a fuck about what the people in this town have to say..." Vera's voice lowered to a whisper. "Not anymore."

Her Gran froze in shock. Vera had nothing else to say to her. She turned on her heels and stormed to the door. "Let's go..." She muttered not bothering to make eye contact with any of the boys.
