July 1st, 1999 - Los Angeles.

Cristina is sitting on the couch, it's the first day of summer and she's already bored, all of her friends already left to go on vacation. She knows she's the only one who's not going to be doing anything this summer because her stepdad is working and her mother is too lazy to do anything except re-decorate their house for the 4th time this year and go to brunch with her friends. There was nothing good on TV and she didn't want to go out so she just went back to her room where eventually fell back asleep.

July 1st, 1999 - Seattle.

Owen is sitting across from his mother, mad. For the first time since his father's death, she's in a real relationship and is about to move across the world.

Owen: Mom, I don't want to have to move to Portugal for him. You guys are not even married, and why do I care that he has a good job offer, it's not like he's my dad or something.

Mom: Owen, honey we love each other and I want to move with him but I have you under my care so you and your sister just have to come with me.

Owen: Since you've met this guy all you do is bad, immature shit. If you do this you're going to ruin everything.

Mom: Owen, first of all, stop cursing!  and second: there is nothing here for us anymore. You're going to leave here soon anyway, you've made that real clear so why are you arguing?

Owen: Because I'll be graduating in a year and I don't want you and your "boyfriend" to make me move away. Do you understand that?

Mom: Well I don't care. Last I checked I'm still your mother, I put a roof over your head, I feed you and until you're 18 you're under my responsibility.

Owen: How are you going to take care of two children when you can't even take care of yourself, out there in Europe when he leaves you.

Mom: Stop it, get out of here. And pack your damn bags you don't have a choice.

Owen gets up and leave while violently slamming the door. He goes up to his room, on his bed, there is a broken suitcase his mom put there earlier. He takes the clothes he has in his closets and throws them in the suitcase.

Owen: That's just ridiculous

Owen's sister, Megan, walks into the room. She stands in the doorway leaning on her side, looking at Owen.

Megan: So Portugal this time, uh? When is she going to stop?

Owen: I hope soon because when I'm gone you can't handle her alone.

Megan: Sure I can, I just need to...help her get her shit together.

Owen: Yeah, it ain't gonna be that simple.

Megan walks over to Owens bed and sits next to him. He takes her hand.

Owen: We're gonna be okay, don't worry. She'll realize that this is a terrible idea and we'll end up staying here. It's not the first time eh?

Megan: You're right.

Owen: Now go put on actual clothes, I know it's the summer but it's still required to wear something on your body.

Megan: You're annoying

She messes up his hair and leaves the room.

July 1st, 1999 - Los Angeles

Cristina wakes up, she realizes that she'd been sleeping for about 5 hours and that it's getting dark outside. She goes downstairs, her mother is sitting on the couch reading an interior design magazine, Cristina sits next to her.

Cristina: Hey mom

Mom: Oh hey Cristina! What have you been up to today?

Cristina: I slept

Mom: Again? You should go out, go shopping get some new clothes.

Cristina: I don't like shopping

Mom: Well you're a teenager and it's the summer so you should be having fun

Cristina: If I went on vacation maybe I would but right now, I'm just bored

Mom: You know we can't bring you on a vacation

Cristina: Then what's all that money you have for? New furniture? You re-painted this room three times this year only, I wish you guys would spend a little of that money on fun stuff.

Mom: You know your dad works very hard.

Cristina: My dad?

Mom: Well, your stepdad.

Cristina: I know Saul works but it wouldn't hurt you to just, leave Los Angeles for a week and get away from the city.

Mom: Oh you know I couldn't do that. I need to go out and go shopping you're such a simple girl, I wish I could just be like you

Helen pinches Cristina's cheek.

Mom: What do you want for dinner? Chinese or Indian?

Cristina: I don't care

She gets up and leaves. She goes up to her room and locks the door.

Cristina: Why can't she just be normal?!

She takes out a pack of cigarette from under her bed and lights one up, then she hides the pack back under the bed. She goes over to the window, in the park across the street there are still kids playing and having fun.
