You can feel the metal box you're sitting in jerking and rising with nasal scrapes and squeaks.
"Hello?" you say, and you can hear your voice echo in the small space, over and over. Hello? Hello? Hello? Hello?
The box continues rising. "HELLO?!" you scream. You fall back against the hard metal side and groan. After a few more futile 'hello's, you bury your head in your hands and sob. You don't know why you've given up already, but all you want to do is lie down and sleep.
A red-tinted light appears a few hundred metres above you and you tilt your head to look up at it from your position curled into a little ball.
An earsplitting screech echoes through the tiny space and then suddenly the box jerks to a stop, throwing you into one of the metal containers surrounding you. Two metal flaps at the top slide away and blinding light hits you in the face. You turn away from it, burying your face in your arms and taking quick, hiccuping gasps.
Something lands in the box, making it shudder.
"It's a bloody girl!" an accented voice declares in shock.
"Shucking shuck, are they just sending us girls now? I betcha Teresa, Amber and Sophia will be thrilled to have friends. The little shanks."
"Dude, why are you talking about them? Is this one hot?"
"Shut up!"
Someone shakes your shoulder but you just roll over onto your hands. The heat is already making you drowsy.
"Hey," a soft voice whispers near your ear. "I know you're tired, but if you get up, we can get you a proper bed."
You groan, and then turn over, sighing. Your eyelids flutter open and then you stare at the owner of the voice.
He's tall, smiling impishly, with ruffled blond hair and shocking good looks. He hoists himself out of the box with his arms and offers you a hand. Slowly, you pull yourself up, looking around at the faces around you.
They're all boys, all in their teens and all staring at you.
You feel numb.
"Uh..." you say, your voice sounding like a broken whistle. "Wh-where am I?"
Everyone snickers.
You feel a little embarrassed and stupid, and look further around you, to the four walls that contain this little field. They are huge, massive, stretching high over your head. Ivy climbs up halfway, trailing off as it reaches the midpoint. One huge opening yawns at the your right.
"You'll get the tour soon, Greenie," says a voice, and you turn to see a tall, dark-skinned boy marching towards you. "I'm Alby, and I'm the leader of this bunch of little hooligans. Not much else to say, I'm afraid." He holds out a hand and you stare at it for a second, before reaching out to grasp it. He shakes a few times, then lets go and gestures for you to follow him.
"She's bloody tired," the blond boy says. "Best get her to the Homestead."
"I'm not blind, Newt," says Alby. "Where the hell d'you think I'm taking her anyway?"
The boy - Newt - shrugs. "Just checking. Good that."
He smiles at you and you return it hesitantly. It drops after a second and you slump after Alby's retreating back.
