"This is the Homestead", says Alby, pointing at a rickety wooden structure. "You'll get a room here, since you're a girl, but most of us sleep outside." He gestures at the hammocks clustered together outside the building.
You swallow and nod, still as unsure of this place as before.
"Um, Alby," you say, but before you can continue, he holds up a hand. "No questions yet. Greenies all ask the same question. It gets old. They'll be answered over time."
You sigh and nod, trudging after him. "We have several jobs. There are the Track-Hoes, who are gardeners, the Med-Jacks, who are like doctors, the Builders, who, uh, build, the Slicers, who get the meat for the Cooks, who cook, the Bricknicks, who repair stuff, the Sloppers, who clean, and the Baggers, who get the dead bodies outta' here. There's another job, but you definitely won't be doing it, since you're as clueless as I'd like you to be."
He's been gesturing the entire time, arms flailing, pointing at this and that. You nod and your gaze drops to your feet. "You'll start trialing jobs tomorrow, okay?" You nod again.
"Hey! NEWT!" Alby yells. You turn to see the blond boy straightening up.
"Yeah?" he shouts back.
"Get this Greenie a room and answer MOST of the shuck questions she'll have!"
The figure nods and begins walking towards you. You've never noticed, but he has a fairly pronounced limp. You decide to ask him about it later.
He catches up to you and Alby in a minute or so and puts his arm around your shoulder. You flinch from the touch but say nothing. Alby nods tersely and strides away.
"So hey, Greenie," he says with a smile. He yanks open the Homestead door and marches you inside. "First day, huh?" He begins to climb the stairs.
"Um, yeah," you say, dropping your head.
He grins and flicks a strand of your hair. "Your hair's nice."
"Oh, uh, thanks," you say, pinching a strand of your y/h/c hair between your fingers and analyzing it. It looks kind of mousy to you.
"Any questions? I'm surprised you haven't exploded yet. Like Tommy did." he grins and chuckles. He pushes open a door on your left. "Here's your room." He opens the closet. Two sets of shirts, two sets of pants, underwear, and small box sit inside. "There's your clothes and, uh..." he ducks his head. "Your girl stuff."
You walk over to the bed and lie down.
"What is this place?" you finally ask.
Newt wrinkles his nose, then sighs. "Tommy challenged us last time to spill the beans whenever a Greenie comes along, so here goes. This is the Maze. It's a giant Maze and we're bloody in the middle of it. No one's ever found a way out, and we can't climb the walls - they're too high for a good, sturdy ladder. That's why we have the Runners, the job Alby didn't mention, who spend all day scouring for a way out. None of us know why we're here, or why we can't remember anything." He pauses and looks at you worriedly. "Was that too much for you, love?"
You shake your head.
"Just happy I know now. Can I sleep?"
He nods and you curl up, sighing.
You feel him brush a hair from your eyes as you fall asleep.
