"Ew, just the thought of them together makes me want to puke."
"How can he stand her? He must be really desperate..."
"I mean, losers with losers, right?"
Juvia peeked through the crack in between the stall door and the wall. She was hiding in the bathroom again, listening to the unsuspecting girls gossip about her and Gray. She had known his cold demeanor made him slightly popular among the girls, and now that she was his girlfriend, they despised her even more.
"God, I wish she would just go kill herself already. She just so...depressing. We don't need someone like her hanging out with someone as cool as him." She watched the carbon copy Barbies nod in agreement before a applying one last layer of lipstick and walking out.
Were they right?
Are they? Let's think about it rationally.
Juvia jumped at the voice. She hadn't heard it in weeks; why was it coming back now? Was it because she was feeling sad again? Did it have something to do with Gray? She nodded slowly, listening to the whisper.
Looking at your parents and these girls. If two groups of people at two different times say the same thing, what is the likeliness it is true?
Juvia fell to her knees, tears running down her cheeks. The voice was right. She didn't belong with Gray.
She didn't belong anywhere.
******
"Are you okay?" he asked for the millionth time. Juvia nodded tiredly, shutting the door to her room. Gray's worried look only made her feel worse. Turning to the mirror next to the closet, she studied her sunken eyes and wild hair. She looked even worse than before, if that was possible.
Maybe she was wrong. Maybe he did care about her.
Does he? Does he really?
Yes. Please, God, yes.
Then why isn't he here?
Because you're making me push him away! Can't you just stop? Please?
You know you need me.
She couldn't stand this. She pulled at her hair and growled, shaking her head wildly.
Shut up. Shut up. I don't need you. Gray helps me, Lyon helps me, I am fine.
I will be okay.
You can leave now.
She screamed in her head until she noticed the lack of retaliation. Shoulders slumping in relief, she pulled on the door handle and ran out of the room. She reached the door to Gray's room and knocked lightly.
"Juvia? Are you okay?" The blue-haired girl only nodded and buried her face into Gray's chest. He smiled down at her before hugging her tightly.
******
"Hey." The girls looked up in surprise, suspicion and disgust clear on their faces. "I don't appreciate what you said about me in the bathroom last week." Juvia stood, with her arms crossed, watching as the girls' mouths dropped open. Her legs were shaky and she knew others were staring, but she couldn't back down now.
That night, she had told Gray everything. She told him about the voice, about the girls, about her insecurities. He simply wrapped his arms around her, held her close, and told her to do what she thought was right. He stood behind her now, his eyes narrowed and arms crossed like Juvia's. To anyone who didn't know him, it would seem as if he were glaring.
Come on, Juvia. You can do this. As if Gray's voice had whispered in her ear right then, she stood up taller and placed her hands on her hips.
"I would also like to request that you stop nagging Gray. We're really annoyed with what you've been saying." Unfortunately, one of the girls simply smirked and walked up, leaning into the shorter girl's face. She had short blonde hair and soft brown eyes, not matching her personality at all.
"What are you, his spokesperson now? You think you can just tell us what to do?" Her boyfriend, who had been watching from down the hall, walked up and put a hand around her waist.
"You don't mess with my girl, blue."
Gray had stepped in, knowing that if Juvia were to anger this pink-haired boy, she probably wouldn't survive. "And you don't mess with mine."
"Gray? You're dating her? Man, when did this happen?"
Everybody face-palmed. "God Natsu, how much of an idiot are you? We've been dating for like, at least a month now. You're so slow."
"Oh yeah, ice princess? You wanna go?"
"Shut up, hothead. Let's go, Juvia." Gray tugged on her arm, pulling her down the hall. "He's not worth our time."
