As Ethan walked down the dark corridors of the cave, he held up a flashlight and looked down at the ground. He was near the hole in one of the cave walls that the group used to get in and out when they need to. He knew if Jessica and Josiah had made it out of the cave, this was the route they would take. Since the group had set up inside the cave, almost three weeks ago when this all started, Ethan was the only one to not go on a run, to not feel fresh air, and to not see the sun. He hadn't left the cave since this all started.

He took a few steps back, grabbing a board that he had taken with him to cover the exit so no more corpses could get in. But just as he was about to put it up, he rested it against the wall, and took a step outside.

Chloe rested the handgun that she was holding in an indent in one of the cave walls, and spun around, her blonde straight hair whipping around to one side as she faced Dan.

"Dan, we have different areas here, you know that. But the only place that needs to have people defending it is by the entrance because there is no other way for these dead things to get in!" Chloe said as she pointed to a chart. On the chart were the different areas of the cave. These areas were the Base, which was an open area of the cave that had the exit from their enclosed area. The Point was the area where they kept their supplies. This was also where they ate and could hide from the corpses. Then there was the 2 smaller areas of the cave that sleeping bags that Ethan had brought in. Chloe, Ethan, Jessica, and Joe. In the other Dan, Faith, and Kaitlyn slept. Chloe then spoke again, "I don't want us risking the lives of the few of us that there are in an area where the dead can't get in! It's too risky!" she said as she walked over to where he was sitting and sat in front of him.

"If nothing can get in then why are you so distant in letting us to this?" he asked as he looked up into her bright blue eyes.

"I said the dead things couldn't get in, not people," she defended, staring down into his green eyes, making eye contact.

"All the more reason that we shouldn't leave these areas unnatented!" Dan said as he stood up and started pacing, breaking the eye contact.

"Why would any person want to come in here?! Or be anywhere near here for that matter?" Chloe said as she turned around and stood up.

"Listen Chloe, all that I'm saying is that we be sure."

"Fine! But only the people who agree with you have to stay on watch," Chloe said as she held her hand up next to Dan's. "Deal?"

"Deal," Dan said as he lifted up his hand and shook it with Chloe.

Joe sat in one of the sleep areas with Kaitlyn and Faith. He was sitting in a chair that Chloe managed to snag last time her and Jessica went on a run. His short, gray and white hair touched the top of the chair that he was now leaning back in. He closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep. Kaitlyn was sitting with her back against the cold wall, staring into her blank iPhone screen, wishing that it could turn on. She was struggling with the fact that it was getting harder and harder to remember the faces of her family and close friends. A tear started streaming down her face but she wiped it away before Faith could see. Faith was only ten and Kaitlyn didn't want to worry her. Faith lay over in the corner near where Kaitlyn was, where she slept and all her things that she still had were. She was playing with two little rag dolls that in her mind, were real. She would play with these dolls as her way to escape how things were now. She briefly looked as she saw Kaitlyn jerk her arm and wipe away a tear, but didn't say anything. She continued playing with her dolls for a few more minutes, and then she looked up.

"How old are you?" she asked with a confused look.

"Oh.. Um.. I'm thirteen," Kaitlyn said as she looked up and gave a quick smile to Faith.

"Well when will you be fourteen?" asked Faith as she focused herself back on her dolls.

"Soon," she replied as she focused her eyes back to the blank screen.

"That's nice," said Faith

"Yeah!" Kaitlyn said as she looked up and smiled, only to realize that Paige was telling her dolls how nice it was. She then focused herself on the iPhone once more.

As Dan sat alone in the Point, he thought about Paige and how her life was now as he kept watch through a small crack in the cave. He crouched next to it, resting one arm on his leg and wiped the sweat off the hand he was holding the gun with. He then heard a noise coming from behind him and whipped around, holding the gun up, only to see Joe standing there.

"Whoa Dan it's only me," he said holding his hands up in the air and Dan lowered the gun as he giggled, "Don't laugh! You coulda killed me!" he said as he lowered his hands and pointed at him, trying to hold back a laugh.

"Well maybe you shouldn't be sneaking up on people with the way things are now!" Dan said, still laughing as he put the gun down on the ground. Then Joe started laughing and the two men shared something that most people didn't share anymore, laughter.

"So how are you holding up Dan?" Joe asked, as he had calmed down now.

"Im alright, I guess. It's Faith that I'm worried about," Dan said as he sat back on the ground.

"She's well protected here. There aren't many places like this anymore, it's safe," Joe replied as he knelt down and put his hand on Dan's knee.

"It's not that I dont think she's safe. I trust it here and the people. It's just the way she's growing up and seeing things. I don't want her to live like that man. She's so young and innocent. Everything changed for her in an instant and it hasn't clicked for her yet. This is the way it is and will probably be forever," Dan said as he looked down to the ground.

"I know how you feel, I don't like Jessica being like this either," Joe said as Dan went to open his mouth. "And before you say it, yes I know, my daughter is grown up and yours is so young, but it doesn't make me love her any less or protect her any less. My daughter is the one who goes on every single run to get more supplies for us. I worry about her every second of every day just like you do with your daughter. So I just want to let you know that if you need someone to talk to, someone that you can relate to, I'm here," Joe said as he stared into Dan's eyes, never breaking the eye contact.

"Thank you, Joe!" Dan smiled as the two men stood up and embraced.
