NERVOUS WAS AN understatement. River hadn't even been this nervous on his first day of high school. He was uncomfortably sweating, and he kept wiping his hands on his pants. He wasn't ready. He wandered the halls, weaving between groups and made his way to the office for his schedule.

He walked in and took a seat where a few kids where, and he waited. There wasn't much noise other than the people in the hall, at least until the principles door flew open, and he was yelling. "The first day hasn't even started and you're in my office already! Lennon!" he yelled, as a dark haired girl walked out calmly, and scrunched her face in a mocking way.

"Ms. Williams!" said the principle, and she stopped walking and stared blankly ahead. "Yes, Mister Peterson?" she said, turning around slowly with a sweet but sarcastic smile on her face. "Let's start off on a good note this year, yeah?" "I'll think about it, I'll let you know by the end of the day. If I haven't got detention, then its a deal. If I have, then the offer is still up in the air" she said before leaving the room, and the principle sighed.

River was amused, but he tried not to let it show. After getting his schedule and locker information, he went to his first class of the day, which was History. He found himself slightly distracted, thinking about the girl from the office.

She was beautiful. Dark hair, fair skin, she was wearing shorts and a white Aerosmith tee shirt.

At lunch, River sat by himself outside on the steps, eating veggies and rice, reading The Outsiders. He sat there the whole time, ignoring stares from strangers. When the bell rang and he went back inside, a couple of jocks had bumped into him, making him drop his book and his glasses. They didn't say sorry, they just laughed.

"Hey Lee" one of them said flirtatiously. "Hey asswipe, next time you bump into someone why don't you at least say sorry" Lennon snapped, and the guys friends ooh'd at him. "Sorry about him and his poor manners" she said to River. "It's fine" he smiled lightly.

"What's your name?" she asked. "River" he told her, and she smiled. "Very cool. I'm Lennon, most people call me Jade though" she said. "Jade?" "It's my middle name. They all think Lennon's too masculine" she shrugged. "I like it" said River. "Thank you" she smiled.

"I gotta go, I'll see you around, River" she smiled as she walked the opposite way down the hall, turning left. Lennon. River loved her name.

During his last class of the day, which was English, River had made a friend. His name was Sam. "You have a weird name, you know that?" Sam said. "You have a boring name, you know that?" River fired back, and Sam smiled. "I like you" he said. "Yeah, I like me too" River said with a smile. "So, where you from?"

River explained everything after school. They went for slurpees. River had never had one before.

"Moved from California, long story short - life there was good but then family stuff happened and now here I am" he shrugged. "Cool, you'll like it here. There's no surfing but there's plenty of other stuff to do" Sam told him, listing off all the stupid shit him and his friend Marcus had done, and are planning to do.

They walked past a diner, but stopped abruptly when a boy and Lennon ran out. She looked angry. "Fuck you!" she yelled, and threw a slice of pie at him, plate too. It got all over his letter-man jacket, and he mumbled profanities as he walked away. Lennon went to pick up the glass shards, and stopped when she saw Sam and River.

"Sup" she nodded, and both boys cracked a smile. "River. this is-" "Lennon, I know. We've met" River interrupted, but felt bad. "Sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt" he apologized. "You met the schools badass before me? I'm impressed" Sam joked. "I am not the schools badass" Lennon replied. "Are too, everyone was talking about you being sent to the office before school even started."

"That's cause I had a smoke behind my ear" she defended. "Still counts" Sam told her. She rolled her eyes and went back inside the diner, coming out a few moments later with her bag, and a smoke hanging out of her mouth. "Where you guys off to?" Lennon asked.

"No idea yet" Sam replied. "Alright then. Want a ride?" offered Lennon, and the boys took it. She drove them to Sams house, and River called his house to let his mom know where he was.

"I'll see you guys later" Lennon smiled at the two. "Do you wanna come hang out?" Sam asked her, but she declined the offer. "I would, but I have plans with my grandpa and I have to go pick him up" she told them. "Have fun!" River smiled, and she did too.

River watched her as she drove away, and Sam stared at him. "Are you crushing on her?" he asked. "No" River scoffed, and Sam stared at him questioningly, but brushed it off.

They spent their time alone at Sams getting stoned and watching tv. Also playing ping pong, and lots of it. River went home at 7, helped with dinner and then went to his room.

He listened to The Beatles White album and laid on his bed, staring out the window. Eventually, he fell asleep, not waking up until it was time to get ready for school.
