My ma had no troubles selling our berries and eggs. She is know to have the best berry bushes around. The eggs are very popular now, d so they sold cheap. But it's still money. Mrs. Marvel was nice at times. Only to maintain a little reputation.

She had a bad reputation back home. Dallas was pregnant from a high school sweet heart. Her parents shipped her off from the embarrassment. She had Junie and lived with her aunt for awhile. She was a waitress at the bar. She met Joe, a regular, and they got married.

Joe is a drunk that sleeps around with women and is hardly home. Dallas is afraid to leave him because he threatened to beat her and Junie as well as to close the market.

She couldn't take that chance. Joe hated Junie for having to support her when she's not his. The town figured he had at least 12 kids a year. Dallas would get letters from mystery woman saying he has a kid. She usually burned them.

Dallas didn't speak of him much. She rarely wore her wedding ring. People figured that why Junie was mean. She had no daddy.

Dallas could snap like a twig in a second if she was mad. She tried to hold it back. Junie was real mean to kids. Always made fun of em. The only kid she was nice to was Patrick Danville. He was the swellest kid in school. His pa was rich from family funds. But they surely didn't show it. They were normal folks just like us.

Patrick was out of my league. He didn't know who I was, but it didn't bother me. I liked Matt Callaway. He lived over by me. Our pas would cut crops together. We would walk to school together too. He was a gentleman.

He even believed me when I told him I saw 'the people'...
