Jason and Kayla exited the admin pod, where they had just spent the last hour updating Dr. Cooper and the Board on their trip to the surface. They were all disappointed no cure had been found, but the kelp treatment was helping at least some of the sufferers, and for that they were grateful.
"I'm sorry about your Dad."
"And I'm sorry I couldn't make it to your mother's funeral, but Missy was hysterical and wouldn't let me leave."
"That's okay, I understand. How's she doing?"
"Better. I was able to leave her with Mrs. Harrison this morning."
"That's good."
Jason nodded, and the two walked on in silence.
"Do you think Missy would come help me bake some cookies?"
"I think she'd love that." Jason smiled at her.
They returned to the pod and Kayla walked with Jason to his family's quarters. Jason thanked Mrs. Harrison and she left. They found Missy playing in her room. The curtain that divided her side from her father's was pulled closed. Jason squatted down in front of his sister.
"Hey, Missy, Kayla wanted to ask you something."
Missy put down her dolls and looked up at Kayla with her big, brown eyes. Kayla's heart melted a little when she saw the sorrow behind them.
"Would you like to come help me in the kitchen? I'm baking some cookies today. Chocolate chip."
Missy's eye's grew even bigger and a smile crossed her face. She nodded her head enthusiastically.
"Okay, let's go."
Kayla held out her hand and Missy jumped up and grabbed it, then turned back to her brother to make sure it was okay. He nodded and shooed her out of the room. Kayla and Missy walked off hand in hand, and Jason heard Missy giggle. It was a wonderful sound.
Returning to the living room, he sat down on the couch and recalled the last conversation he'd had with his father. It had been an argument. How he wished he could talk to him one last time, tell him he loved him. He hated that their last words had been heated. He put his head in his hands and the tears began to flow.
After a while, he got up, wiped his tears and blew his nose. He had another job to do for Dr. Cooper. Might as well get it done. He went to find the pod where Garrison was staying. As he walked into the common area of the pod, he was greeted by raucous insults.David and Garrison were seated on the couch, game controllers in hand.
He waited until the match was over, then spoke to Garrison.
"I just came from a meeting with the Board. They've given you access to all of Atlantis, except for the Engineering Department. They have some proprietary things underway in there. It's how we support our life here, so I'm sure you can understand why they can't have just anyone walking through."
