Chapter 1
"I'm here, I'm here!" I began hollering before I even burst through the police station doors. I saw everybody in the room flinch, some people jumping out of their seats in the corner.
An old woman sitting at the front counter also finches, jumping to attention in her seat. Her red hair, streaked with grey throughout, was put up in a tight bun with stray hairs flying every way. Her skin was deathly pale, as I could see the veins underneath her chubby cheeks. A large circle mole on the side of her cheek solidified my opinion: she was a mirror image of Roz, the mean blob monster from Monsters, Inc. I shivered as I could just picture her screeching a raspy "Mike Wazowski". It fit perfectly.
She first assessed the situation, looking me up and down with pursed lips. She must not have liked what she saw, because he eyes slowly transformed into a heavy glare, focused on me. In that moment I knew. This was the woman who called me.
Against my better ideas, I ran straight to her.
"My name is Lucy Stevens, I got a call to come pick up a baby who I think is my niece that I've never heard of!" All of my words came out in one jumbled rush, causing me to inhale quickly and be out of breath by the end.
If possible, the woman's glare just grew. I think the mole was too, but I wouldn't let myself be distracted by it.
"Oh yes. The Chicago woman. You sound like a great Aunt. I'll be back." And with a roll of her eyes, she was up and gone. I just glared at her back.
I knew she was being sarcastic but it was annoying. I would've been a great Aunt if I associated with my sister. Dylan and I were hoping his recently married sister would get pregnant soon. I was actually very excited to be an Aunt. I would have loved to had known about it.
I realized that my fingers were tapping rapidly against the counter, so to stop myself from annoying them as much I rested my head in my hands. However that only succeeded in making me tap against my face annoyingly. With a heavy sigh I pushed myself off the counter, turning and looking at the waiting room where only two people sat. A very large tattooed man with bulging muscles, and a dainty, deathly pale girl who itched her face while twitching harshly.
Definitely on something, I thought.
The sound of sharp heels clanking on a tile floor behind me turned my attention back to the desk. The woman came back, but this time there was a tall, dark skinned woman with her who wore a soft smile. I sighed in relief at the sight of a friendly face.
"Lucy Stevens?" Her voice was soft and sweet. She had a kind voice, one that instantly made me want to trust her. Her chocolate brown eyes were beautiful, twinkling as if they were smiling independently from the rest of her face. She was beautiful.
"That's me." I murmured quietly. She smiled wider at me, reaching her hand out towards mine.
"Thank you for coming on such short notice. I know this has been a wild day. Here," She grabbed my hand, slightly tugging me towards the hall behind the desk as she spoke. "Let's go sit down for a moment so we can get everything straightened out."
I just nodded along as she walked with my hand now held between her elbow and forearm as she
rubbed my hand in a comforting manner. The hall was big, white, and empty except for a few pictures and awards every so often. I glanced at one that showed an officer and a cute black and tan german shepherd dog. The caption above it read, "In loving memory.." along with his name and dates of birth and death. I felt myself grow sad for the sweet looking young man. Taken so soon.
