I desperately had to get away. Cold nightly shadows weigh heavily upon my chest. My breath puff out at a constant pace. My vision left in my wake. I tussle my way undettered through the dense forest. The eerie quiet fueled the unrest in my soul.
Adrenaline pump through my veins, along with the erratic pound of my racing heart, deafening in my ears. Tinges of salt trickle into the air with each leap.
Paws crush against the undergrowth whilst life envelope the dead leaves as I race ahead. A gifted second chance awakens them to flutter once more.
A swoosh slice through the edge of my ear as it seeks blood. I suppress the urge to yelp my surprise at the invisible opponent.
A plonk rattles from up ahead. Vastly approaching a fallen tree trunk, my peripheral vision caught sight of a bright red object. The stark contrast scream for my attention from the slush snow which still covers the bark from yesterday's downpour.
Mid-leap my gaze lock onto the object, a feather? Suddenly time seems to slow in midair once a sharply carved steel point passes inches from my sight.
My eyes widen in surprise as I follow the intricate lines and dents of the neatly carved stick. Black tape snakes around, followed by a bright red feather.
The arrow hit the tree next to me, but realization hit me twice as hard. An intentional declaration of war only means one thing.
My paws hit the ground with a thud. My body almost gave out underneath my weight. Fear spike through my being as my throat clog, luckily not costing my balance. With the repetitive swoosh and wood splintering on my heels, I am convinced.
Unmistakably it's them, The Slayers. Known for their relentless persistence and ruthlessness, they will never quit their pursuit after our kind. Damn, they already drove us out from every corner of the globe. They will never stop. Not until they have every one of us in their filthy grasps.
Only a handful of us were privileged enough to escape. Driven apart and left exposed, it forces us to standalone. Our numbers down next to none, they easily pick us off.
With newfound determination, I sped up. I wasn't flying, but it sure as hell felt like I was about to lift off.
I was the last hope for our kind.
Focusing all my energy, I need to outsmart them to hightail it safely out in one piece. Time to leave Vanarch behind and flee to the land beneath. Albeit nothing but a legend, it's the only chance I've got. One I'm willing to stake my life for.
