"Hey."
"Thrushflight? You're back from the Moonstone? That was fast."Cloverheart blinked her green eyes blearily in the dark.
"StarClan didn't visit us tonight,"In the dark,he could barely make out Cloverheart's figure as he lowered himself into his nest. "Something's wrong."
"Look on the bright side,Thrushflight,"Cloverheart gave his ear a swift lick as her green eyes lighted up the dark."Maybe they're tired, watching over Clans which constantly play the same drama every moon."
Thrushflight purred,his spirits lifted. "That's a good joke. Goodnight,Cloverheart."
"Goodnight,Thrushflight..."He dozed off,not hearing the rest of her words. It was a blissful sleep until his paws found soft grass.
By the looks of it,Thrushflight knew it was StarClan. But he was confused. They did not visit him tonight at the Moonstone,so why did they want to visit him now?
An array of angry voices rose above the sound of water. Quietly,Thrushflight peeked from the nearest boulder. There was a gathering of StarClan warriors around a pond, their starry pelts almost blinding.
"If this is the best we can do,then I want no part in it!"A RiverClan she-cat was yowling.
"We have tried our best,"A single voice quieted all the others. "Our efforts have all been in vain."
The same she-cat spoke up,this time her tone softer and more worried. "What do you suggest we do,then,Lakestar?"
The tom named Lakestar, who seemed to earn an immense amount of respect from the other warriors, got to his paws. He surveyed the crowd of cats before him.
"I will go."
Those three words were followed by stunned silence. It seemed to have a lot more weight than it sounds.
"Our greatest asset cannot be reached,Lakestar,"A tom spoke quietly. "It will be much harder without him."
"I have faith in the Clans,"Lakestar's voice was strong and truthful. "We have overcame every other challenge before this. Why is this any different? It's just slightly harder than the others."
His gaze was searching, and it landed on Thrushflight before widening. Thrushflight woke up with a gasp, his heart racing at being discovered.
The nest beside him was empty. Cold sunlight was already spilling into the den, warning Thrushflight of the leaf-bare to come.
"Cloverheart?"He looked around camp, searching for her grey pelt.
Without warning,a ball of fur crashed into his paws, causing him to wobble unsteadily.
"Thistlekit! What did I tell you about running around in camp?!"Dovelight sounded horrified as she bounded up to them, grabbing Thistlekit with her jaws.
"Sorry."Thistlekit mumbled.
"Apologise to Thrushflight."Dovelight meowed sternly, putting her down and nudging her forward.
"Sorry for bumping into you,Thrushflight."
"It's quite alright,"He blinked sympathetically. "Where's your littermate,Thistlekit?"
Dovelight seemed to sober up,and Thrushflight immediately felt guilty. Not too long after Dovelight's kitting, her third kit had passed into StarClan. She had been too tired and grieved to name him,so he had passed without a name. Only Thistlekit and Manekit remained.
"I'm here!"Manekit announced, clambering from the nursery. Being the older among the two,Manekit had been acting strong for his younger littermate.
"Try not to run into the elders' den, alright?"Thrushflight nosed Thistlekit along. "They need their rest."
Both of the kits looked to Dovelight for permission, and she nodded. "Don't bump into any warriors on the way!"She called after them.
"I'm really sorry,Dovelight. That was insensitive of me."Thrushflight apologised, feeling ashamed.
"Not at all,Thrushflight,"Dovelight meowed,a sad smile on her face. "You know,I like to think Thistlekit is a reincarnation of Thistletail. After all,she always wanted to stay in the Clan."
"She does look like Thistletail."Thrushflight heard that the elder fought bravely against the rogues that had ambushed them not too long ago. He turned to the elders' den, when he did a double take.
The mysterious tom that had appeared in his dreams a few times was standing there, his starry gaze sober, before dissipating.
"Thrushflight? Are you alright?"Dovelight was staring worriedly at him. "You spaced out for a moment."
"It's nothing, really. You don't have to worry about me."He meowed with a touch of reassurance.
Dovelight still stared, unconvinced but she shrugged. "Okay."She then padded away to watch over her playing kits.
StarClan,Thrushflight sighed. What do you want from me?
