The next morning they woke up early, around 8am. Again Aya had not woken up all night, and it worried Joe. He got up and went into Aya's bedroom, and saw that she was still sleeping. He gently picked her up and carried her to the changing table. As he was changing her diaper, he felt her forehead. She was burning up again. He frowned and finished changing her diaper, bringing her into their bedroom. She slowly started to wake up, whining softly. "Shhhh...it's okay, Aya..." Joe said as he tried to console her. "Jon, she's burning up again. Should we give her some Children's Tylenol before we leave for her doctor's appointment?"
Jon yawned and sat up in bed. "Yeah that might be a good idea. Hand her to me. I'll see if she wants to eat."
Joe handed Aya to Jon and went to get the Children's Tylenol. He walked back into the bedroom and measured out the right dose. He gave it to her and then watched as Jon began to breastfeed Aya. He went back into Aya's bedroom and picked her outfit out for the day. Suddenly, he heard, "Oh that is fucking nasty!!" Followed by a gag. He rushed back into the bedroom where he saw that Aya had puked on Jon. Not just spit-up, but this looked like she had projectile vomited all over him. He watched as Jon gagged some more, and he couldn't help but to laugh at him.
"Here take her.." Jon said, gagging as he ran to the bathroom. Joe laughed as he cleaned up the mess that Aya had made. "Mommy sure has a weak stomach, huh, Aya?" Aya hiccuped. When he was done cleaning the mess up, he picked up Aya and walked with her into the bathroom, chuckling as Jon vomited. When he finally was done, he looked up at Joe and growled. "You're burping her from now on..." He said as he gagged again. "God that was fucking nasty...still can't stop gagging."
"Well, try to calm yourself down so you can get ready. We have to leave soon." He brought Aya back into the bedroom and laid Aya on the bed, changing her clothes. Finally, Jon came back into the bedroom and grabbed some clothes out of his dresser. He changed his own clothes and sat on the bed when he was finished. Once they had gotten ready, they brought Aya out to the car and put her in her carseat. Joe got in the drivers side and Jon got in the passenger side. As soon as Joe started the car, Aya began to cry. Joe frowned as he heard the cries. Jon reached back and started rubbing Aya's head in attempt to soothe her. But it didn't work. The whole drive to the pediatrician's office, she cried her eyes out. Joe started to get annoyed. "She's giving me a fucking migraine..."
"I know, I know. I'm trying my best to soothe her but it's not working. Poor baby girl is probably in pain." As he said that, Aya let out a ear-piercing scream.
"Goddammit..." Joe muttered under his breath. "Make her fucking stop!"
"I'm trying, Joe...you need to chill. She can't help it, she's in pain."
Joe growled as he pulled into the parking lot of the pediatrician's office. He parked the car and got out. He groaned as his head started to throb. "Motherfucker..." He mumbled.
Jon got out of the car and grabbed Aya out of her carseat. She calmed down a little bit, but was still crying. She kept pulling at her ears as they walked into the building. Joe grumbled when he saw that the waiting room was full of kids. He checked in with the receptionist and sat down with Jon and Aya. He rested his arms on his knees and put his head down, quietly groaning. "My head is fucking pounding now...and all these other noisy kids are just making it worse." He whispered to Jon. "Did you put my Excedrin in the diaper bag?"
"No I forgot."
"Goddammit Jon...you know better."
Joe looked up as the door opened, a nurse calling their names. "Finally.." He mumbled. They walked back to an examination room. "The doctor will be with you shortly." The nurse told them. By now Aya had kinda stopped crying. Now she was only whimpering, still pulling at her ears. "Joe, you need to calm down. She can sense that you are upset."
Joe sighed as he tried his best to calm down. "Ugh...this migraine is making me nauseous." Joe said as he put his head into his lap, groaning. Jon used his free hand to rub Joe's back, trying to make Joe feel better. Just then, the doctor walked in. "What seems to be the problem today?" She asked.
"Ever since yesterday, Aya has been running a high fever and constantly rubbing at her ears. We gave her Children's Tylenol to make the fever go down, which it did. She woke up today with a high fever again, and we gave her Children's Tylenol again, but right after giving it to her, she puked it back up while Jon was feeding her. Actually, she puked ON Jon..." Joe explained, chuckling at the last sentence."
The doctor laughed. Then she got her equipment out and checked Aya's ears, nose, and throat. "Well, it looks like she has an ear infection in both ears. I'll have to prescribe her some antibiotics and those should make her better."
"I just have one question...how did she get such a bad ear infection this early in life? She's only 6 days old." Joe asked.
"Some children and babies are just prone to that. I don't want to upset you or anything, but I think Aya might be one of the babies that are prone to ear infections. She may have to get tubes put in her ears if she keeps getting ear infections. But we'll have to see how she reacts to the antibiotics first. As for the fever," She said, getting a thermometer out. "She'll have to get medicine for that right away. We'll have to start an IV on her to give her the medicine."
"You're gonna stick her with a needle? No...please don't do that...my baby girl is in enough pain as it is, she doesn't need anymore pain." Joe said.
"Joe, it's the only way..."
"Can't we just give her some more Children's Tylenol?" Jon asked the doctor.
"Well, you could, but it might take a while to take effect. With an IV, we'll notice a difference in her temperature right away."
"Fine...just please make sure she's in as little pain as possible."
The doctor left the room briefly to go get the IV and machine. She came back and started prepping Aya's arm for the IV. Aya let out a blood-curdling scream as the doctor put the IV into her. Joe cringed when he heard the scream, and looked at Jon, who had a sad look on his face. Joe tried his best to soothe Aya. "Shhh...it's okay baby girl...it's okay..." He looked up at the doctor. "Can I please hold her while she's getting the medicine? I just hate to see her laying there crying...I might be able to soothe her by holding her."
"Sure thing."
Joe picked Aya up and cuddled her as the medicine pumped into her. She slowly stopped crying, only whimpering now. "Shhh...it's okay...Daddy's got you. Everything will be fine baby girl..." Joe said, kissing her forehead.
Soon, the medicine was in her and the doctor took out the IV. "She should be good now. If her fever comes back just give her some Tylenol." She wrote a prescription for a liquid antibiotic. "You guys are good to go now. Give her that antibiotic three times a day until the bottle is empty. Call back if it seems that it didn't work." With that, the doctor left the room and Joe and Jon left the building. They got the medicine filled then went home, putting Aya to bed and laying down themselves, exhausted from the long day that they had.
